I have an older S&W Model 1955 Target (1955 vintage) that has 454/455 cylinder throats. It's never been very accurate in my hands and I'm thinking maybe a larger bullet might work better. They only thing I have in 454 is the 454190 made for the 45 Colt. Might also be worth trying in a a pair of model 1917s I have.

Mostly I'm curious if it has worked not having a crimp groove. Anyone crimp into the top lube groove successfully? I think since setback of the bullet is what worries me most maybe just a taper crimp at the top of the top lube groove might work. Maybe try to trade for something more suitable?

Any thoughts on this combination appreciated.

I have a .45 ACP Hand Ejector Model of 1950 Military which is the same way.

#454190 will work just fine in .45 ACP or Auto Rim brass when seated out a bit and crimped in the top lube groove, using 4.0-4.5 grains of Bullseye or 5.0-6.0 of Unique. The 6.0 of Unique is a "full charge" load which approximates factory lead .45 Colt.

I also loaded the Remington .455", 255-grain lead conical factory bullets the same way.
An old style .45 AR or .455 roll crimp seater is best, but a modern .45 ACP taper-crimp will work.

In shaved .455 Webley's I back off the load and shoot 3.5 grains of Bullseye or 4.5 of Unique.
Accurate has several "modern Webley" bullets which work very well in the .455 Colt and Eley, as well as in the .45 Auto Rim, or in the .45 Colt Rugers to exploit their longer cylinder length.

My avatar gun is a Uberti, with .4565" throats, I use the 454190 sized .456" and lubed with SPG it works great in 45 Colt, and it quite accurate being the boolit fits the throats fairly snug. I would suggest the best accuracy will be found with the boolit sized to a light drag fit in the throats. If the throats are uneven, groups will only be but so good. Having evenly sized throats will definitely improve groups, IF you can size to fit them.
