I just purchased and am waiting on delivery of an M71 Mauser. It is the earlier single-shot M71, NOT the 71/84. I have been reading and researching all I can on loading for them but have been finding some conflicting info.

Am I correct in stating... old M71 = .451 diameter and M71/84 i= .446" (with slight variation per manufacturer and rifle)?

I am afraid to purchase dies or a mould/boolits until I can verify and perhaps check my particular rifle upon arrival.

Interesting as I have read of a number of guys using .451 with their M71s. I guess I will measure and slug the barrel when it comes. Meanwhile, I need to figure my plan on brass

Exactly ... slug it first since they vary and then you'll know for sure. My 71/84 rifle is .450" and I size to .451" ... shoots great with some of my closely hoarded SR4759. Shooter brass can be formed from .45-90 or if you don't mind a bit more effort from any basic belted magnum case.

Do not know where you have already been/looked but typing in 71 Mauser up in the magic box will answer most. Many of the early very talented Meisters were kind enough to lay out there findings and experiences.

Yes, I have done that under both 71 Mauser and 43 Mauser. Unfortunately, reading all those past threads is where the contradiction and confusion comes from. :veryconfu

I think I would be waiting for the rifle to arrive and then move on from there. What brass will be used, actual chamber and throat dimensions and then groove diameters (slug), then what dies and how they are to found dimensions. All the variables you will encounter and will need working through on your journey. Confusion, not really, just a bunch of measuring and acquiring/modifying the proper items to achieve your goal.

Our buddy Mick has been all through this. He has a .446" mould he got from me that worked great in his 71 and the 71/84's we both had for awhile.

Been chatting with Mick. He has been using .439 lately in his. I am getting some bras a from him to start with. Also been chatting with Blake and he has been sharing his method for determining best diameter boolits

.............I have an Amberg made 1871 Mauser with a very clean barrel and it slugs .451". I immediately bought the Lyman 457191-PH mould. This drops a slug @ 475gr that mic's darn close to .451" and a bit. However as others recommended, I'd wait until you had the rifle in hand (and slugged) before buying a mould.
