Right now on the Discovery Channel, their "modern marvels" program is discussing the history and usage of lead in modern and ancient society. In the section about using lead to make x-ray vests, I notice that NONE of the workers that handle this stuff every day in their jobs are wearing gloves. Kinda makes you think, doesn't it? Now, back to the show....

I was watching it at the same time. That is the kind of smelter I would like to have access to or at least a dozen of the skids of lead. How about the organ pipes.

lathesmith;
Wearing gloves to handle lead ingots is completely unnecessary---unless the're HOT.
Washing the hands is sufficient for safety. Freshly cast lead has no evil properties. Only after it has oxidized to the point where the dust may float freely when dislodged, do you need to use caution about inhalation or ingestion.

How about the lead crystal wine glasses? Gives a new meaning to 'Gonga' - @ $65 each, not cheap, but real resonators!

They said that U.S. bullet makers use 600 tons of lead per day.

I have noticed errors in many of their programs. I wonder if this is one...

Does that figure include domestic military and foreign sales of bullets?

The show got the whole process of fluxing wrong.

First, they called fluxing "flashing." Error number one.

Then, they used a small candle to flux (flash?) a huge pot of lead. Error number two - not enough flux or fluxing time.

The guy maintaining the melt explained that the candle wax "brings up impurities from below and cleans the melt." Error number three -fluxing cannot clean what it does not contact. Stirring and scraping brings up the impurities from below and on the sides of the pot. The flux then works on what it contacts after it is scraped/floated to the top.

It was interesting otherwise.

It does indeed appear that the History Channel will re-run this "Modern Marvels: Lead" program Saturday, Oct 11@ 6pm Central Time. Watch it if you have the chance guys, I think you will enjoy it!

Yes Pepe, I noticed the only guys who seemed to wear any protective gear at all were the ones directly involved in the heavy smelting process, or the guys working around the old batteries. Holy Cow, there sure is a LOT of lead in that recycling warehouse! It looks like a caster's heaven in there!

Cool, I'll set the dvr. Doe Run smelter is just south of St. Louis (40 Miles from me) and I have thought of contacting them about a lead purchase.

It looks like they package it up in 2500-pound bundles. How big is the trunk of your car?

They said the average lead use in a lifetime was 911 pounds. I think a few of you use a little more.:-D

Watched most of the lead show, and found it interesting.

Wish I hadn't wasted my time watching the shows that followed about "Countdown to Armageddon" and "Seekers of the Lost Ark."

2000# = ton X 600 =1,200,000# per day X365 =438,000,000# per year/ 300,000,000 US population = 1.46# per man women,children a year. When broke down that way it isn't much.
