I have an ever growing bucket of berdan primed brass I get from bulk lots of range brass, of course the scrap yard only wants to pay wholesale for it:???:

What kind of nifty items could I cast out of solid brass using a greensand or lost wax mold?

It seems like such a waste to dump it for $1.20/lb when I look at what bar/round stock and casting ingots go for.

Ideas?

"CAST BOOLITS" belt buckles would be a fun project.

Hi all,

Some friends and I built a foundry along the lines of the "Gingery" plans you can get from Lindsay books. Convert it to propane with the 'Ron Reil" burner, and you'll have a fearsome heat source.

If you're looking to melt old rifle brass, there are a couple of things to be aware of:

1. To fill up a pot with molten brass, you will need to refill it several times, as the shell casings cook down about 5:1.

2. You must flux the melt with some borax and broken glass. Brass is mostly Copper and Zinc. The temperature it melts at is above the ignition temperature of the zinc, so you must keep it away from the air with a floating flux layer. When you are ready to pour, you quickly skim it and pour as fast as possible. Avoid breathing the fumes are they are toxic.

Here are some pics of my setup:

Black Powder cannon barrels ! Have you seen what folks are asking for them !! Golf ball size is a fun way to spend the afternoon down by a pond. Launch a floating target raft and blast away.
