The receiver was marked something like this - I'm not exactly sure now: Marlin 39 AS Golden Original

I saw one today at a pawn shop. I've heard that they are pretty much desired but I've never really looked into these 22's.

This one was of a newer model, it had the cross bolt safety. It was in pretty good shape, ( I didn't make note of the S/N) however the thing that I noticed was the firing pin seemed a bit odd to me...

Does this model have a free floating firing pin?

I noticed when cocking it the pin stuck out past the bolt. I also was able to push the firing pin inwards (flush) after cocking, with the hammer still in the back position, keeping in mind there was no cartridge chambered. Is this normal?

Is it worth near the asking price of $375 ?

Again, its in great shape although I didn't look down the BBL, the action looked clean.

Tks for any input !

The Marlin M39s are as good a general purpose .22rf as money can buy! One of my all time favorites!...In fact, probably the finest .22 lever gun ever made. The price is a fair one for a used M39, I've seen them a little higher in the past few years.

The Price Is Right, and the FP is normal.

They're very accurate rifles, easily peepable or scopable, your choice.

I've owned 6. Felt sorry for a brother in law and two friends and now own 3. Paid from $100 to $210 for them but don't think that you will find that much anymore. That price of $375 is not out of line now days. Sometimes they will show up in pawn shops and if you know the owner you might get them for less. What Pietro said, the firing pin is normal but don't dry fire them they will break. And last, they are the greatest of LA .22.

If I had the extra cash I would have one. To go with my single six 3 screws to practice for SASS.

I'd go $375 for a Marlin 39A in decent shape. Thankfully, I don't need to--I already have a 1974-made example that is a GREAT little hunter and shooter. It is likely the least ammo-sensitive 22LR firearm I've ever owned, in terms of both accuracy and feed reliability. El Cheapo Bulk Packs of any make will shoot respectably in the little critter. I've worked up several 10/22s for daughters and nephews, but those crumb-snatchers WILL NOT get the 39A until I cash in my chips.

I have shot a Marlin 39a and I borrowed that same rifle to go squirrel hunting. They are fine rifles and are very well worth that price if it is in like new condition. I could never get the guy that owned that particular rifle to sell it to me. Luckily I finally picked up an Model 39 M carbine for 150.00. It is in great condition, but deals like that are very rare.

I have a 39A and a 39M. These are but two of about a dozen 22s that reside here. They are also the most used. Squirrels with super colibris at 25 yards don't stand a chance. Buy it!!!

What does : 39 AS Original Golden or Golden Original mean?

Additionally:

It has smooth stocks w/pistol grip wood, can anyone give an approx manufacture date?

Thanks again!

My first rifle I purchased at 10 from the proceeds of mowing lawns.

$119 for a brand new 1870- 1970 Century LTD Commemorative as pictured in my avatar.

Still got it, and it still looks almost new. Got a lot of effection for that rifle.

Pat, I found one of those about 4 years ago in a store. There were two other guys standing behind me that said "Man, I was hoping you wouldn't buy that." The shop owner said he had put it out about 30 min. before I walked in. Guess it was MY lucky day. It's a little beat up but not bad and I think it gives it character. It has a 4 didgit ser#. It has become my favorite .22. I know another guy that has one new in the box but mine's for shooting.

Mines got a 4 digit too. Must be twins. I see them once in awhile. Definitely a fine rifle.

I'll never forget when we went to the store to pick up the rifle out of layaway, my Dad had a fit when he found out they threw away the box. For this rifle. Can you beleive that? He was pissed.
