Bought a used Star Lubesizer from evilbay in great condition. I used it last night and lube was getting all over the boolit. I read in the instructions that you can adjust where the lube is placed on the boolit by plugging the die holes with #7 or #8 lead shot. The instructions also show that a special tool is necessary to remove the die ($12.50 + shipping).

Can the die be easily removed without the special tool, or is it best to go ahead and order one?

Thanks

The Star removal tool will allow you to remove the die without damaging the press. I consider it well worthwhile. My Star's dies are a tight fit but the tool (it screws into the nose punch hole) allows you to safely use the leverage of the handle to remove the die safely in a straight line.

Jim,

Sometimes you can remove the die w/o the tool depending on the lube and the machine.
I have 2 Star's, one needs the tool no matter what, and the other, if the lube is soft, I can use a 1/2" - 5/8" wood dowel about 5" long, and push up from the bottom.

Try it and see if it works, the wood dowel won't hurt the lube/sizer bore.

use heat to soften the lube, the dies in mine come out with thumb pressure. Bill

I'm with the other guys....heat it up with a heat gun or hair dryer, and see if you can push them out with your thumb or a dowel. If not, the 12.50 isn't too bad, and it can get any die out without heating.

Remember to loosen the die lock screw if it has one....
