Unusual scale - Any information please?

Can anyone tell me about this scale, it's one I've not come across before. It's clearly marked RCBS but obviously a lot of crossover from Redding. Looking at the photo it has the Redding bearing end plates, beam, stirrup, panhanger, and pan etc.


Was there ever a tie-up between the companies? Was it made by Ohaus? My best guess would be late 1960's.


Any information would be appreciated.

I've seen these scales before. At one time Ohaus made scales for RCBS so I think you are on the right track with this one. This style probably morphed into the RCBS 5-10.

It is an interesting scales. Looks to be magnetically dampened rather than oil dampened. but the body is very close to the redding herters style. I've seen some herters that were very close to the redding bodies also. My guess would be Ohaus made for Rcbs with the same die cast dies as used for a lot of these scales and slightly different machining between the 2

I have one. I bought it in the 60's. I still use it.

I have one as well, the box says the 09060 Powder Scale. The paperwork calls it the rcbs precisioneered powder scale.

Excellent thanks - now tracked down a few pictures but would love to know the Redding/RCBS story.

If there is a story to be told, im sure one of the VERY knowledgeable collectors of all things reloading and casting will chime in. Im glad to help.

I have the Redding version of that scale setting on my bench. My Dad bought it and a Rockchrusher for me over 40 years ago when I wanted to get into reloading. It is still the only mechanical scale I have ever had.
It was new when I got it but could have set on the gun dealers shelf for years before it came home with me.
Dad is long gone but that scale and press are still chugging along.

That is the first RCBS scale after the end of Ohaus production. Model 5-10 I believe, the catalogs are home and I am not. Most scales follow what some people call the Redding pattern. Redding was the first to offer a scale of this design in 1952?
A company called Pelouze (sp) made them. If you look closely at Redding/Herter's/Pacific/everyone else they are the same beam and pan, only the frame differs.

Back to the 5-10. The beam is different closely following that of Ohaus who made the early Lyman and the Herter's M-4.

This is not a final word, as there are a lot of bunny trails that need to be followed to get a better understanding of scale design and production.
