Is there a place that sells bullets made with the "standard" moulds that get so much love here?

I just want to see what my little rifle likes before I commit to getting into casting. Sure I have the option of getting every mold I wanted now, and HOPING to sell them off at a loss in the future if they don't work for me, but id like to have a better idea of what to buy based on actual performance.

I think if you were to post here some specifics of what you'd like to try.....you'd probably find some members willing to cast you up some small lots for testing, and likely for a very reasonable price.

In the past, when I wanted to try out a load before buying the mold, I utilized the boolit exchange sub forum. Always had perfectly satisfactory exchanges, and everyone was happy. You could also post a want-to-buy in the swapping and selling section.

Do a google search of whatever it is you're looking for and there's a good chance someone is selling it.

Knowing what you're looking for would be a big help for pointing you in a specific direction.

There's also a good chance multiple people on this are casting something similar and posting in the bullet exchange as WRideout mentioned might yield good results.

Im more interested in the molds lyman used for the cast bullet handbook 3 and 4, for .308 Winchester/30-30, and 8x57.

I would love to do a little casting for others but with the requirements for both an ammunition components manufacturing FFL and a pure BS $2500/year ITAR license it’s not worth the costs involved. Most commercial companies will use Magma molds due to the speed at which those machines cast. I dropped by the shop of a commercial caster I know and by 1:00 PM he had made 12,000 boolits that day already.

I think you are making a good decision to try before you buy. I have mostly Lee molds, so it’s not so expensive to experiment. However, when you start talking about the top shelf molds, you can spend a lot of money quick. Best to be sure you are going like what you are getting. I hope some members can help you out. Sorry I don’t cast for what you are looking for. Good luck.

Montana Bullet Works has a HUGE catalogue of common, and not as common bullet molds. In fact, if one likes to gaze at quality pics of beautiful cast boolits (guilty!) one can get distracted there for a bit.

The nice thing is that different alloys and sizing diameter can be specified for most boolits. I haven't personally ordered any, but people that I trust give high marks.
