Newbie casting

Hi all. My name is Hernan, I am Argentinian, surgeon, shooter and I have been reloading my own ammunition for more than 15 years. Now I have started making my own bullets. Tired of not finding bullets for the 7.65 x 54 Arg, I bought a mold Lee (C312.185) I went through the sale of tires and I took a bag of wheel weigts. I made my first bullets using a gas check that a friend makes. The precision was absolutely miserable, I spent two days taking lead from inside my mauser, so I found this forum and now, with the difficulties of the language I am starting to read a bit to learn this new world.

Welcome, a lot to learn and many answers can be found here, you just have to ask them.

The leading in the barrel may have been due to a too small of boolit. You need to slug your barrel first an then buy a mold, improper fit will lead the barrel.

Use the search feature in the upper right hand corner and type in slugging the barrel. There are several methods. Read as much as you can on this site, it’s full of most of your needs.

You will need a more expedited way of removing leading than normal cleaning affords.

The item if you can find it is called either Copper Chore Boy (or Girl) I don’t remember which. You need to test it with a magnet because some generic forms are copper plated steel and that is not barrel friendly. If it does not attract to a magnet you are on the right track. This product is a shredded copper pot scrubbing pad. It cuts lead lead me butter but does not hurt your barrel innerds.

Along with the copper chore boy you will want to wrap it around a worn bore brush. Trial and error will guide you as to how much you can add to the brush and get it through the barrel. Some cleaning solvent helps as well. I don’t think which solvent you use is as important when you are using the copper pad material as when you are just using bore brushes alone or cleaning patches.

Hi, I did not find that brand in particular, but I'm seeing some others like the Birchwood Casey Lead Remover on ebay, unfortunately not available in Argentina. I'll see if I buy one on ebay

Good luck. I had a model 1909 Mauser that shot well with .314 dimeter boolits. Make sure you have all the jacket fouling out of the barrel before shooting boolits.

I think I do not understand what you mean to me. To verify that there is no jacket of a full metal jacket bullet inside the barrel?

Exactly, if you have copper streaks in the barrel lead will stick to it on it's way past. Be sure to clean your barrel several times with not only power dissolving solvents but copper dissolving solvents in series. Copper will stick to the barrel in one shooting, then the powder gets deposited and then more copper, etc. In an old military rifle you may need to take several layers off to make sure you are basically down to steel in the barrel.

This is an important aspect of shooting lead that is not often mentioned.
