I spent 10 hr on the forge today. I was able to hamer out two knives and a split cross the knives are in the oven at 250 for two hr for tempering. Lord willing I should have them ready for Christmas.

In need to knockout a few more crosses and some hearts one more long day and I should be done

Very cool. That's a craft I'd like to get into.

I was able to get my handles on.some crosses made, but I'm still behind. I should be ok. Im ready to stop swinging a hammer and eat some ham and turkey.

Chsparkman it's rewarding, and a good way to work out some frustration. At the same time it's frustrating hard on your body and hot

I tried to build one from a RR spike, but my drifting skills need work.

I'm still learning. The few knives I've done I've cleaned up and profiled with a file. With all I wanted to get done I borowed a 1x30" sander. I need to step up my efforts on a 2x72 sander build

I have a harbor freight 1x30 and a Kalamazoo 2x48. The 2x48 I like, but can't get belts locally. I have a 5 gallon bucket of spikes, have done anything with them yet.

I was looking at how to build a homemade forge. I'd like to give a knife a try.

I'm a ways off on my build
What belts do you use for your 1x30 ? Is one kind any better then another?

I built my coal forge using a brake drum,a table from a postal jeep and a turkey fryer stand. My gas forge I built from a 20 lb propane bottle. Lots of videos on you tube.

I added a cap to the bottom pipe for a clean out. Got lucky on the blower, my brother found an electric one in his in-laws building. I would like to have a hand crank for back-up.

I built a 2x72 this fall with treadmill motor. Not very hard to build but really pay attention to squareness and alignment from the very start. I really scratched my head trying to get the belt to track. Finally, after checking all my work Twice, I checked the parts I purchased. Found that the 2 holes for the work wheel axels were not drilled square to anything! Took the shortcut and bent them square. I am going to drill and weld in some bushings when I get a chance. Really handy tool, wish I had built it years ago.

I just did make it. The hearts on the cross's are hard to see I'm going to have to rethink how to do that the small stuff is tough for me
