I’d like to see it shooting a 500gr hollow point. Even on a moose, don’t you think that boolit might just keep on going? Would sure like to have updates on how it works out for you. I guess it’s too late for moose where you are this year?

Thirty some years ago, we never had any ballistic gel, but once did some testing on a problem bear. It was really surprising, that if you didn’t hit a major bone, the bullet just kept on going. Even after going through ribs. Granted, it wasn’t a big grisly.

I put a small hollow point on these bullets and at slow speed (1400fps) they opened up like around 3/4 inche
but when pushed at 2000 fps they mushroome less and you could see they had lost some weight
so to my thinking even if I loose 100 gr. I still had 450gr .....
the hollow point is 1/4 inche deep

I am eager to see with this bullet with this king of me plat and hollow point what they will do
don't worry pics of this will come

Reminds me of a 458Lott I built some years ago. It was a LOTT of rifle that hurled a LOTT of lead down range with a LOTT of powder and proportionally a LOTT of recoil. It was a beautiful rifle with a premium double lugged stock and express three leaf sights and banded front sight and hinged floor plate. It was not a LOTT of fun regulating the three sights with the load it was designed to be fed. The extra thick pacmeyr recoil pad didn't help a LOTT. It took a LOTT of time with a LOTT of shoulder pain and a LOTT of frayed nerves. The one thing this beauty was not a LOTT of was fun to shoot.

First saw the picture of the rifle and thought it was some type of big bore. Curious on brass for the beast, will you reform 416 Rigby or is there virgin brass?

That is an awesome looking rifle. I'll bet it's going to be tons of fun.
I had a 470NE double and had Dan at Mountain Molds cut me a 500gn mold that looks very similar to yours, mine had a 70% and 90% meplat. I could push them to 2150fps without any problems useing either 2500+ or Carnauba Red lubes. I used RL-15, Fed 215 primers and a tuft of dacron.

when using carnauba red I made a box with a alluminium plate and a bulb that heats up this plate to 95 degrees
doing this the lube stick better to the bullet and specialy flows better around such big bullet

Carnuba red is one of the best lubes I have ever used as well-until I started powder coating. It worked great in a 470 Nitro double for me. I'll bet that big boolit would look like a tree stump if it was coated some color.

I started looking at powder coating
it seems there is 2 kind one polymer the other I forgot the name
is this powder coating in a way abrasive
and do you put gas check also

Taterhead
12-23-2018, 02:05 AM
If you get PC from Smoke4320, the powder is not at all abrasive. If you were to use GCs with lubed boolits, then use them with PC. I found it works best to seat checks before coating. The coating doesn't adhere well to checks, but that is of little consequence.

Beautiful rifle and a "strictly business" looking boolit! Congrats.

232574I have several molds with GC's and I usually check them after I coat them but it works either way. I've shot a bunch of them through several barrels and as far as I can tell there is no abrasion at all. I size them after the coating and it stays on perfectly. I have found that I can cast a little softer boolit and drive it pretty hard without any leading when I coat them. That's a benefit if you are looking for a bit of expansion on game. A boolit like the one you have cast for your new toy will not need expansion. It will poke a pretty big hole in anything you shoot with it! You cant beat Smoke4320's powder. The results are far and away better than the Harbor Freight powder. Here are some that were sized after the coating and I have never found one on the ground in front of the firing line. If one comes off in flight it usually will not shoot very well and most of mine will group better than jacketed from some pretty high performance handguns. BTW, I love that rifle! Congrats

I like checks after coating, too. Depends on the fit but sometimes they snap on better after coating.

These are 476 Lee's, the longer heavier one is plain base. Hi-Tek coating.

Yes I'll add my .02 here. You done good, that is a Beautiful Rifle, and good to see that you didn't skimp on the optic! Nice rifle deserves a nice scope.

Do get into powder coating. It eliminates several problems, mess, leading, lube migration into powder, etc.

You can shake and bake the powder or in my case I got a PC gun and do it like that. I use an abandoned Toaster Oven to cook my boolits and it works great. Smoke's powder is definitely the best out there. My total investment into PC is <$100 and I am good to go for the rest of my life!

I use a toaster oven that I bought off Craigslist for $15, a metal cooking pan that will fit in the oven, a roll of non stick aluminum foil to line the bottom of the pan. Get a clean butter tub or any plastic tub that has the #5 stamped inside of a triangle on the bottom. Put a small handful of 6mm air soft BB's in the tub along with some of Smokes powder( about 2-3 teaspoons) and add about 20 of those big boolits of yours. Shake the tub 'round and 'round and jiggle it a bit every 10-15 round and round (with the lid on of course) sessions until you see the powder attaching to the boolits. Then I use a pair of skinny needle nose pliers to grasp the boolit by the nose and set it on the tin foil lined pan. Gently set it in the preheated toaster oven at 375-400 degrees F for 20 min. Take it out and let them cool and size accordingly. This is my low $ setup and it works like a charm. Super easy and your loaded ammo will look as good as it shoots. Pics forthcoming as soon as I get them loaded.

questions
6mm bb's that are small ball bearing what is air soft?

number 5 on the plastic tub what does it stand for

when you are knew at the stuff you look stupid

tell me want to know

murf205

We don't look stupid here, somebody helped me get started and I/we are more than happy to pass what we know along. Feel free to ask any questions, the people on this site are the greatest anywhere and VERY knowledgeable on just about anything pertaining to our hobby/obsession!
The 6mm BB's are what some people shoot in "air soft" guns and they are made from a hard plastic like material and you want just enough to barely cover your boolits-not too many. You can get them at Wal Mart in the sporting good dept but I bought mine at Academy Sports. The #5 on the tub apparently has the right composition to make good static, along with the bb's, as you shake and swirl the mixture. At any rate, that's what was recommended when I started powder coating so I used it with good results. I have had better results by not trying to shake too many boolits at a time for best powder coverage.

canuck4570
12-23-2018, 07:05 PM
here in Canada the Wall mart don't have a gun department but don't worry I will find these air soft 6 mm bb's
will make a search on static tub (in which way does static helps)
quite simple..... powder from one of member
bb's and a tub
thank you for help
one more question do I size my bullet let say I need .460 to .459 and calculate .0001 for the powder thickness?

murf205
12-23-2018, 07:13 PM
I had the same question and that is the reason I size and gas check after coating, then you know what diameter you have. The static helps attach the dry powder to the boolits before you get them out with the pliers. In the search box, go to Smoke4320 powder and he has some great tips and he sells air soft bb's as well. He is a gold mine of information. Remember, don't hesitate to ask questions, we're glad to help.

Airsoft BBs are plastic BBs shot from an airsoft BB gun. If you buy powder from Smoke4320, and many of us recommend that you do, he will sell the right airsoft BBs for an inexpensive price.

The #5 on the plastic container specifies the type of plastic. #5 plastic has been found to be prone to generate the static electricity needed for powder coat to adhere to the bullet. Once adhered, then it is cured in an oven. I found a nice convection toaster oven on Craigslist.

not exactly ..... here where we hunt moose the forest is so thick that shooting a moose and it does not drop on the trails made well its a very hard to trail and you can call them most of the time a lost moose so we like them to drop there on the spot.....

6MM BBs are the plastic BB's that are used in Airsoft guns. Airsoft guns are a new type of BB gun, they come in all styles and run off CO2.

The #5 is the type of plastic used in the tub. The #5 type of plastic imparts static electricity to the boolits which makes the powder stick to them.

With a gun that nice nobody would think you are stupid. We all are drooling with envy.

Good Luck Merry Christmas
