A while back I was talking with a member here about slugging barrels. They said I needed a brass or aluminum rod just smaller than the bore. I can’t think of anywhere that I’ve seen that sells solid rod of various sizes. Is there a name for special built stuff? I’ve used wooden dowels but the barrel I need to do is smaller than the dowels I have and I was warned against using wood to hammer through the barrel. Interested to see what y’all find

And Farm King in Illinois and Iowa.
I carry a 12 inch brass rod 1/4" in diameter in my handgun range bag just on general principles. I have used it several times recently when other people had issues at the range.

Online metals has brass round stock in various sizes bot standard and metric.

In my pistol box is a 12" brass slide hammer with a 1/4" rid used it some for others also. Has a 1 1/2 lb weight on it makes driving stuck bullets out easy.

I use a steel rod wrapped with masking tape to where it just fits in the barrel.

I start driving the slug with a short (6") wooden dowel (with a straight grain) then finish with my wrapped steel rod.

Never had a problem. I found that the aluminum rod bent to easily.

Mc Master Carr is where I got some different sizes. Usually get the 360 grade for 11/32", but the 353 grade for the common sizes like 1/4" works fine too.

Try a web search for "Fastenal" near you. They should have what you need. If our local store is typical they have good folks behind the counter

I have also used a steel rod wrapped in electrical tape. Used many times with no problem.

All suggestions have been good. I got mine from a selection at a Menards store. ( < a regional store like Home depot & Lowes.)

Here is a good example of knowing where your location is, under your member name would help. Someone might be in your area & just give you some. "I" would".

I've gotten brass rod at Lowe's. Pretty decently priced.

If you do alot of these in different calibers, get the Brownell's Squibb Rod kit which threads onto the end of a Dewey cleaning rod.

I keep mine in the range kit and it paid for itself in one season as a range safety officer removing stuck bullets for people.

1/4" phosphor bronze brazing rod. Use a short section about 6" long to start a slug and I have a few depending on barrel length. Threaded one end 1/4x20 and a short section of aluminum and a small ball pein hammer. Frank

I’ve used steel all thread with black electrical tape wrapped around it.

The last rod I bought IIRC, was from McMaster Carr (I couldn't remember the vendor I used in the past) but a 1/4" rod 6' long is less than $15.00 and that should supply some rods for your hand guns and rifles. Also google "brass rod"and you'll find several vendors...

Fastenal carries brass rods. They have stores all over but not all are open to public. So it’s best to call in advance.

I purchased three brass rods off of amazon for my range bag, just right for pistol squibs. Sure you could find longer ones.

For short rods I have collected some brass "float" rods rom old flush toilet innards. The threaded ends allow me to affix brass nut and spin-file it down to just under bore size.

I bought several 36" lengths of brass rod in various diameters from a local metal outlet (Metals Supermarket, but that is a Canadian company). That gives me enough length to tap a test boolit through a barrel to slug it and still allow for the length of the action when swinging a small mallet.
