Miroku 1866 from Buds

After work proceeded hastily to local FFL to pick up my new 1866 deluxe in 44-40. The brass had what appeared to be woodstain all over the butt plate and part of the receiver. Wouldn't come off with Brasso. So called Bud's and the operator is processing a return and replacement. I commented it shouldn't have shipped like that, didn't someone look at it? She says "when the guns arrive we don't want to tamper with them." I asked her to make sure someone tampers with (inspects) the replacement before shipping.

I walked this back when a return was never processed by the seller and figure I will just put in the extra time and effort to polish out the stains. It does seem to be a high quality rifle with beautiful wood, and a silky smooth action.

Had my eye on one of these for a bit. Waiting for a 45 colt version to hit buds (check almost every day) as I already have an 1873 Miroku in 44-40. Suprised to hear Buds never processed the return. Usually get good service from them.

Not sure about the cause for the stain.

Is it soild brass, you could take it off and buff it. That is a very nice piece of wood

Yes it is solid and that is what I will try to do today.

Try some quad 0 steel wool.

I think the laquer enhances the yellow appearance of the brass. I used a little 0000 steel wool, then Dremel felt with a little buffing compound, cleans it up. Then it's shiny but not nearly as golden. I am going to add the fillet of JB weld on the loading gate cartridge stop as well.

So, the brass part that I polished has lost its golden hue. Winchester is said to be solid brass. So what happened here?

Check with a magnet to see if it's just plated steel.

Polish it all now and you'll have to let time change it - Her name is patina.
Some muzzle guys try ways to fake the time brass equasion.

+1 I will let it age. It's not so much that I want it shiny, but I don't like those horrid stains. I do plan on shooting BP in it BTW.

Hey, If you want to age the brass back to what it was or alittle more, You could just shoot the rifle with BP like you said, or I aged a powder dispenser by just taking BP residue with water and rubbing it on. It takes the shine away the first time. depends how much you want it to look used... It literally changes colors instantly.

Cold Blue rubbed on and buffed off a few times will give a natural aged look to polished brass.
