Welcome to CB Max66

Here are a few things I put together to help you get going

. If you decided to start casting to save money, forget it. You won't, you'll just shoot more.
Casting boolits (lead bullets) properly is a science, once you know the basics, not a hard science.
There is a lot of good information on CB. The Google search (top right of every forum page) is a gateway to all the knowledge on this forum. IF you can’t find your answer there ask the question (Please be as detailed as possible, pictures help http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?344661-Capturing-amp-Posting-screen-shots I would be very surprised if there wasn’t someone on this forum that could answer ANY (firearm related) question you might have)
http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Contents.htm
1. Boolits need to be cast .0005 to .003 (normally .002) over the slugged diameter of your barrel for accuracy and to avoid leading. If the fit is wrong nothing else will work right.
a. slugging a barrel (it is safer to use a brass rod or a steel rod with a couple of coats of tape to avoid damaging your barrel http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinSlug.htm
b. chamber casting https://www.brownells.com/guntech/cerrosafe/detail.htm?lid=10614
or pound casting http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?356251-Pound-Cast-instructions-(for-rifle-chamber)
2. the right alloy needs to be used for the velocity and purpose of the boolit (don’t fall into the trap of going with too hard an alloy
Economical way to easily test lead hardness
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?355056-Easier-pencil-lead-hardness-testing

Some alloys harden over time
http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Chapter_3_alloySelectionMetallurgy.ht m
different alloy’s different end hardnesses

Lead alloy calculator
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=45784&d=1341560870
3. velocity the bullet needs to be pushed hard/fast enough to get the proper spin, have the proper velocity to accurately reach the target but not so hard as to be dangerous or strip the lead off in the grooves instead of spinning the boolit..
The boolit needs to be the right weight for the riffling/twist rate of your barrel
Powders range from fast to slow, you need to choose the right powder for your barrel length & application.
Loading manuals list the best powders for certain calibers and boolit weights.
NEVER use any posted noncommercial load data without first checking commercial load data to see if falls in the safe parameter for your firearm!! There are several firearms out there that can handle much higher pressures than others!!

I have cast projectiles for 38 years before I came here.
I learned two things right off the bat.
1) I did not know as much as I thought I did about casting, I'm learning things all the time.
2) I quickly learn that in all those years of casting bullets, that they were not bullets at all, what I had been casting were instead boolits.
Welcome to Castboolits!

Welcome. Every addict loves company, that goes for us too. If you are like me and started casting to save money you will find that does not happen. On the positive side you will shoot more and have a hobby that will give you a lot of satisfaction. "Stickes" are your friends, they contain a wealth of knowledge and are easily accessed using the search function. Again welcome aboard and enjoy the ride!

Welcome aboard and welcome to the madness. I lurked here for a year or more before joining, I read a whole lot.

I have been casting for 40 + years and discovered that there were a bunch of stuff my mentor taught me was a bit of bohunk.
I learned some better techniques and some things about alloys that didn't really matter (stuff from my mentor) and things that make
the casting easier. One of the best bits of advice I learned over the last few years is that FIT IS KING all else is secondary.

Welcome to the forum! I’ve been casting for 30+ years and as time goes by I realize how little I know and how much more there is to learn. Ask questions, there is a lot of knowledge on this forum and it is freely ,and in a friendly fashion , given. Tim

Welcome Max66 this is a great place to start. I’ve learned so much from these guys and have skipped most of the hard stuff that they have so much wisdom, that’s not in books. Went right into power coating, never messed with lubing, so skipped that mess. Works perfect for me, never have seen leading in my life. Read all the stickies, some times twice just to know what they’re talking about. Like they said fit of the boolit in a known diameter barrel is everything. And no question is to dumb to ask, we’ve all been where you are. Buy a good micrometer, they’re not expensive.

Welcome to the site and the craft. I have been casting for over 50 years and have been a member of this site and it't pre-cursor site since 1998. The internet has enabled bullet casting to take a giant leap forward.

Buy a lee 314 T L - 90 - SWC mould and some liquid Alox and a can of Bullseye. Expand the case necks to hold the boolit and have more fun than allowed by law.
