I went to the gunclub yesterday evening as they were starting a skeet league .

No I have no intentions of shooting in the league , but a couple folks asked me to come so I went and took a couple shotguns along !

I went out and shot a round with one of my old grouse guns . It's a Westley Richards side by side boxlock action with a good amount of engraving ! It's also 12 gauge straight stocked and a little light ! Hadn't shot this gun in quite a few years so I was happy when I walked off the field only having missed 2 birds !

I had also brought along a gun I've owned for well over 4 years and was still NIB . It's one of the Marlin 410 leveractions . You can imagine the looks I got when I pulled that thing out !

I didn't do as well as I did with the 12 gauge but I did alright . In a round of skeet there are four pair of double's to shoot . This had me a little worried at first . But I am happy to say I broke both birds in three of the pairs !

That was surely a new experience for me ! Just might have to get a MEC 600 JR and about 250 410 hulls and start shooting skeet some again !

Won't find many lever shotguns that's for sure.

hmmmm. a lever action 20-ga.
now that would add some fun to hunting, especially if it carried like a 92 or 94 win.

I always enjoyed those tales of some skeet or trap range where some old guy showed up with an Iver Johnson single barrel or Marlin bolt shotgun and cleaned everyones clock! My experience at trap has been less than pleasant. How was I to know using duck loads was a faux pas?! Anyway, if you can hit with the 410 lever I'd love to see you bust those fancy boys up.

I "used" to be one of those guys [smilie=1:

Had my Krieghoff K32 set up to shoot skeet AND trap . I shot registered events in both for a number of years .

You'd be amazed how much better my disposition is now that I no longer shoot skeet and trap competitively :drinks:

I always got a great deal of satisfaction when I could best the guys with the Perazzis and Kreighoffs with my 870 Express or Ruger Red Label. (Heresy using a FIELD GUN!)

As the guy at one of the golf shops says, "it ain't the arrows, its the indian".

Good Shooting 6Pt!

Thanks !

But I say again , I was one of those guys with the Krieghoff's !

I had a K32 that had a set of 28" skeet barrels with Kolar tubes for the smaller gauges . And then I had a 32" o/u barrel with a Vandalia rib for trap doubles , plus a PAIR of K80 unsingle barrels . One was a modified barrel for 16 yard birds and the other was a full barrel for handicap !

My shotgun had a monte carlo stock and fit me well for either trap or skeet !

Over the course of time with that gun I was AA in everything in skeet ! And in trap I was AA at 16 yards , 25 yards handicap and A in trap doubles .

But ya know what shooting trap and skeet like that about broke me ! That stuff is worse then having a drinking or drug problem :groner:

What did you have a Remington 32 or 3200 ?

I had a nice Remington 32 in my hands today ! Belongs to same friend I was shooting with wednesday night !

My first skeet gun was a Citori 4 barrel set followed by a WELL used Remington 3200 with Purbaugh tubes . Then I got the K32 with the Kolar tubes !

My first trap gun was a Franchi 2005 combo 34" single and 30" double . My second trap gun was the three barrels for my K32 !

Sold that whole setup about 15 years ago ! Now I wish I had the whole mess back !

Runfiverun , you know a K32 with tubes inside is not light either !

Mine weighed about 9 1/2 pounds with the tubes in it [smilie=1:

Recoil from the 28 gauge was nothing and the 20 gauge wasn't much either !

But even though I had the barrels ported the 12 gauge at skeet would thump you pretty well !

Although with the trap barrels on the 12 was not bad either !

Last 4 or 5 years I shot skeet I shot the 20 gauge in the 12 gauge event and doubles event !

Yee Haa!!! You shouldn't have told them it was a shot gun. They would have thought you were shooting clay pigeons out of the air with a rifle. lol Sounds like fun though and thanks for sharing your experience. Give us a jigle when you get a chance.

Thanks but I already have a Iver Johnson SxS 410 "Skeeter" !

I had a Ponsness Warren 800C for 410's a while back but it went with the 12 , 20 and 28 PW 800C's when I stopped shooting registered skeet and trap [smilie=1:

Dang, Sika! I think a heroin addiction with crack chasers is cheaper than shotgun sports. Those PWs are fine machines, for sure.

I once took a saiga 12 to a club skeet shoot. Talk about getting some funny looks from the purists. Nothing like showing up with something with a pistol grip, folding stock and a box mag and asking when the Skeet shoot starts. Unfortunately, it didn't point exceedingly well and my scores were not anything to write home about.

6PT-SIKA have you done any live hand thrown Pigeon shoots? :)

I have been shooting the same shotgun since I was 12 lol. A 1952 Belgium Browning over under Pigeon grade. But since I have been shooting the same gun for so long it works for me in the field or trap or skeet as well. I tend to think my grandfather was right pick a gun you like use it alot and you will know it like the back of your hand and do well with it.

Never shot any live piegons in a match . Everywhere I was at that you could shoot them they cost about $5 a bird .

I found when I was shooting well and alot I could pick up mosy any shotgun and do very well !

They used to say when you purchased a new trap or skeet gun , to shoot it a year before deciding if you like it or not !

I see some of the guys at our club with a new gun almost every week ! They think a new gun may make them break more birds . But if they worked on the basics with their same old shotgun they would most likely do alot better .

You are so very correct !

I was at a little skeet club friday with a close friend . They were having their club championship ! Anyway a couple of them asked me why I didn't buy another skeet gun !

And I told them trap and skeet are worse then drugs [smilie=1:

When I got the 800C's they were about $500 a pop ! Also had a PW 375 with 2 heads for loading the 10 gauge and the 16 gauge .I think the 375 with the 16 gauge head was about $250 then and the extra 10 gauge head cost me about $90 .
