May I assume the 48 is 22 mag WITHOUT the 22 LR cylinder?

Assumption is correct, I checked with S&W a while back and they WILL NOT refit one.

How is the bore in the Winchester 1890?

The bore is pretty good, plenty of rifling, no noted pits. I've been trying to photograph it, but that is easier said than done.
