View Full Version : Requesting guidance for 30 cal cast!
09-23-2008, 01:31 PM
I fired my Lee pot up for my Lee 150gr 30 cal gc mold and cast, checked and lubed 400 of these projectiles. Hornady checks, boolits were sized to .309 and checks crimped on by the Lee lube/size tool. Lube is Lars 2500+ lube, pan lubed. Boolits are straight WW lead. Now I am seeking advice on loads. Up till now, all of my cast shooting has been pistols and a 45-70. I need some input on the 30 cal loads.
Gonna start of with the trusty old 30-30 Model 94 Win. I have my boolits ready! I have my brass primed!! Now for the powder...........................
I have Unique, WC846, and IMR4064 on hand.
I want to be in the 1600 to 1800 +- range for the 30-30.
After I master this, I will move on to the .308 and the .06.
Any and all help s very much appreciated.

I will give that a go Felix. I assume you have had good results with this load. Did you use a Mag primer with the 846?

Either pistol or rifle primer, but use rifle primer with that particular powder. If using a magnum primer, don't use Fed Mag or WW Mag. They are too hot for that case length. ... felix

I shoot the Lee 150 FP with 9 grains of Unique in my 26" 1894 with very good results. It's a nice mild load that will put 5 rounds in under 2 inches at 50 yards.

Maineboy, Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to trying the Unique loads I have heard so much about!!

for straight ww i would start under 1600 fps and take it up easy, watch for signs of leading.

With the Lee 150 gr I have had very good success with 9.0 gr Alliant Green Dot and with 20.0 gr IMR 4198. Both loads shoot under 1 1/2 inches at 50 yards and 4 inches at 100 yards. I feel this is quite good for a lever action 30/30. I have not found a factory load that will shoot better than these. They might have more velocity but I think a cast at 1700 to 1800 will do what I want . It might cost a little to try powders other than what you have on hand but folks here can give you the experience they have had.

Depending upon your bore size, you may need a fatter boolit. My old Savage 30-30 requires a .312" boolit for best accuracy. 10 grs. of Unique with a 311291 GC shoots right around .5" at 50 yds.

Would 4064 be a good powder for cast in the 30-30. I know its good with J bullets in the 30-30. No data on it though for cast. Can you just reduce the jacketed load by say 10
% and start form there chronographing and watching pressure?? I use 4064 with good results with cast in the 45-70.

4064 might be a bit slow but sometimes a case full of too slow of a powder will give good results with cast.
it may/will leave unburned grains in the bbl.
i would bet the lyman or lee manuals have a lot of what you are looking for tried and true in them.

IMR guy said to start off with the 4064 at the MIN side of their jacketed data for cast. I asuumed that I would reduce it a bit. He stated that with cast, reducing 4064 would be fine to a small degree. I realy like and have a bunch of it. So I am going to load some low and shoot over the Pact then slowly move up!
