Anyone with a lathe able to make a couple of these cheaply for me? It is an anvil base kit by Hornady (Stoney Point) for use with the Bullet Comparator, it give a bigger flatter surface to a caliper to keep a case from being measured crooked. I can get one for around $12 shipped but it seems a rather easy thing to make with a lathe or mill.

And a follow up question, anyone make the straight piece for the OAL gauge or have one they want to part with?

12$ is pretty cheap. There is a couple hours on manual machines to make this. If done on CNBC would be fast but getting stock etc.. plus paying back a machine.
So 12$ shipped what are you waiting for?

Really? I figured chuck a piece of round stock into a lathe, cut two slugs off, use a mill to do the slot, and drill/tap the hole..walla. Like I said, don't have a lathe or mill so maybe those youtubers make it look too easy. If that is the case, then yes $12 is a steal.

If your time is worth 25.00 an hour, and any good machinist makes more than that, then this would have to be done in about 12 minutes, if you include materials and shipping. Unless you are making at least a dozen of them it is not worth the time to even set up the machines.

Drilling a hole or cutting a slot is actually very simple.. It's just setting up that dang uncooperative machine to put the hole and slot in the right place is what takes the time.

Well if you order 100 I can probably make them for about $5 each but a hassle even then. That hole in the side is a pain to line up.

Is it steel or alum? what is the diameter of the red part?

I figured a hobbyist, not a machinest, for this. I think I'm going to attempt this myself with hand tools, I have a drill press with a v-block for drilling round stock and a router with an end mill to do the slot. I'll cut the piece off once that's done. I may even powder coat it with one of the batches of bullets. It's just a 1/2" or so aluminum piece, I'll check with my guy's at work to see if they have a scrap piece laying around.

Hmm, since I am going to build a hobby forge, I may try to pour me a piece of round stock to use, or even sand cast one out of brass with the slot already there...I guess it's not really about the $12.

you are going to ruin a end mill and possibly get hurt.

a hand router is not meant to do metal.

a hand router is not meant to do metal.People use them for 80% lowers, seems safe enough, the only problem is securing the round stock properly so it doesn't move, I'll definitely keep safety in mind.

My advice is buy the part for $12 shipped and be done with it. I have a lathe and mill but by the time you buy $3 or so in screws etc it wouldn't be worth the time. Oh and using a handheld router for something this small is likely to result in wrecking the parts or seriously hurting yourself. FWIW youtube videos do make it look easy but are like hunting videos. The boring stuff is edited out along with most of the mishaps.

Then it's gonna cost you 400.00. These guys are right, I used to estimate machining jobs for a living. If you want it done right, and want 2 pcs, you should be prepared to pay at least 50 bucks ea. $12.00 ea is the selling price after Hornady paid a machine shop x dollars each to build possibly 1,000 pcs or more.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I have a small machine shop at home and will not turn on a machine for less than $30/hr!
You don’t have a drawing with dimensions either!

i'll be a little more blunt than the others. you want someone to do this for less than $12.00. is that some kind of joke!!

No I do not have a lathe or mill and sorry for getting off thread.
Get ya a steel washer of the diameter you want.
Get ya 2 pieces of key stock 3/4 square.
Drill and tap the holes you need to clamp the the tools needed.
Weld the key stock to the washer be sure to leave the gap you need.
With a bit of for thought you can "make" just about anything.

mill= 2500-3000 rpm = metal work
Router = 25000- 30000 rpm = grenade

Amazing that one "learns" more from watching u tube than from actually performing the work themselves.

big difference in a long rectangular piece of metal that can be held tightly in a vice verses a round small object that has nothing for the vice to grip. you are bound and determined to spend 100's of dollars on medical bills to literally save a buck.
