We have a 1971 Ford 3000 diesel that is low on hydraulic fluid. What is the correct replacement fluid? The stuff in the manual is discontinued.

new holland makes the factory lube for them still, want to say it is ford 134 oil. any trans/hydraulic fluid will work but not regular hydraulic. the fluid in the transmission is separate from the hydraulic system so I have never figured out why they require the combo trans/hydraulic but its what ford calls for and what I have always used. I have a 3000 gaser that does the bulk of the little jobs around here. I am sure you are aware that the transmission fill ports do not fill the lift system hydraulic, its filled from the back end. the filter is internal and a royal pita to change

We have a small drip from a 1/4" hole on the belly of the tractor south of the oil pan. Really don't have the tools to split the tractor. 3 point arms aren't lofting the bush hog so I am betting it's low on fluid.

thats usually an indicator of low fluid. most tractor supply stores have "universal trans/hydraulic oil" , just check the application chart and they should list ford tractors. the thousand series fords are built like tanks and can survive stuff like this with no ill effects. now I got to go look for this hole you speak of and see if I can help some more. they do make a kit to stop the steering wheel leak if yours develops that, it works wonders.

that hole is a drain for the clutch housing, which means your front tranny seal is leaking, not the end of the world, just keep an eye on the tranny fluid level. there is a big plug beside your shift levers for adding oil and they use a plug on the side for the oil level.

Call around before you buy if possible. When I changed the fluids in my tractor a local oil supply company had Mobil hy-trans for almost $30 cheaper per 5 gallon bucket then tractor supply , Wal-Mart or the parts stores had the off brand buckets for
