I've done a couple conversions to original .44 Colt that use Heel-base bullets. I've gotten the crimp and load down pretty well. But it's significantly more time-intensive that loading conventional bullets, and I got to wondering about loading .44 caliber hollow-base bullets instead of .452 heel-base bullets.

Have any of you tried this? If so how did it work and what bullet did you use?

I have not tried that with a .44 Colt. However, I have shot a LOT of 41 Long Colt and quite a few .32 Long Colt. Both work well with both heel-base and much smaller diameter hollow-base bullets. Remember, the hollow-base bullets MUST be cast from very soft lead (40:1 lead:tin) or they will not work.
