I am reloading a Lee 401-175-TC bullet for my 40 S&W. I had been sizing the bullets with my Lee sizer but have recently decided I wanted to try the same bullet with a PB gas check. So, I got me a lubriszer die and a Lyman 460 top punch. When I looked at the cross reference located in this forum it listed the 460 and 43 top punches. I assumed (I know, I know) they were the same. However, the 460 seems to be too big. What I mean is the outside diameter of the punch hits the face of the sizing die before the bullet is pushed far enough into the die. The grease band is not being filled completely. Is the 43 smaller in diameter and if so, why is 460 listed as a usable top punch for this bullet.

I had a man make for me a flat nosed top punch that I use for everything now.

IIRC it was Buckshot that made the punch.

The flat punch that Tom W suggested is a good idea. You could also use a wadcutter punch for a 38 if you wished.

I think it's supposed to be the #495 TP. From experience I can tell you the #495 will work, but leaves a shallow ring on the Bullet nose. The #43 does a perfect job.
I have all 3 of ACCURATE MOLDS Flat Top punches , but have not tried them on that bullet. Although they do work very well on SWC Bullets.

Ok, so I’m going to order a 43 top punch to see how it works. Thanks for the input. If that doesn’t work I’ll get a WC 38 punch.

Go to Accurate Molds. Tom sells a three pack of different sized flat top punches for $5
