In general what factors do I need to control to get cast and j-words to shoot to the same POI. I shoot in military matches in which we must use open sights and military calibers with FMJ bullets. I would like to practice with cast and then shoot the FMJ in the match. Some of the caliber I have used the the past include:
.303 Brit
.223(5.56 Nato)
7.5 French
7.5 Swiss
.30-06
8mm
7.62x54r
7.62x39
6.5 Swede
7.65 Mauser
6.5 jap
.30 carbine
These are fun matches shot at 100 yards, and I get my best score with the AR15.

That quest might just rank right up there with the search for the Holy Grail! I shoot most of those cartridges with jacketed and cast. I usually regulate the front sight to give a point of impact just above (group sits on top of front sight) the point of aim. If the rifle has a 100 yard/meter setting then I zero there. If a 200 (or 300 meter with many Mausers) meter setting then I zero at 200. I zero with an accurate load that most often duplicates an equivalant service load. I then find with most of the accurate cast bullet loads (medium to heavy bullets at 1850-1950 fps for most of the cartridges listed) for those cartridges that a 100 yards zero requires a sight elevation setting of between 450 and 600. Each rifle is somewhat different do to differences in sight radius.

The two exceptions are the 7.62x39 and .30 carbine. With the .30 carbine a GC'd cast bullet of 105-115 gr can be loaded to duplicate the velocity and point of impact of service or jacketed reloads at 100 yards. With the 7.62x39 (either AK or SKS) I zero at 100 meters with service ammo or equivelant jacketed reloads with the rear sight set on 100 meters. Then with my cast load of the Lee 155 gr bullet over 4895 the rear slide is pulled back the the battle sight position. The cast load then hits point of aim at 100 yards.

You might have to attach a false aiming point above the bull on your practice targets. A second target layered over the first and staggered up by the correct amount will let you keep the same sight picture.

either that or slow your jacketed stuff down to the same speed as your cast.
with my 7.5 and 7.65 arg.
my cast loads shoot to p.o.a. at 100 yds,i can go faster and slower with my cast loads,
but these were accurate enough, and shot to the right place, so i quit messing with them.
and who cares if your jacketed stuff is going 1900 fps? as long as they get to the target
in the same place.
besides that, spending all that time practicing, then going to a match and shooting a different load isn't practicing at all.
