45 Nut:

Can you add this (from a response to "Pitman" yesterday) to this "sticky":

Just about every mould maker has a different "code". Lyman/Ideal moulds are marked with three digits indicating the "size-to" diameter followed by three more that are just a more-or-less chronological sequence number (though these have in some cases been re-used from discontinued moulds); another group of numbers appearing on both blocks are a "match number" to keep the pair together. Some makers use a pretty logical diameter + weight number; some others, like Hensley & Gibbs just use a sequence number, and you have to have a chart to decode them - some of these are posted on CASTPICS. One weird one was used on the old Modern-Bond moulds (which originated the separate blocks and interchangeable handles back in the '20's, soon copied by Lyman). They used, for example, "D-311-955", meaning the fourth (A, B, C, D, ..get it? ) design in 0.311" diameter (with a new sequence for each caliber), 0.955" long (150 grs.); a double-cavity mould I have with two different weights/lengths of the same bullet is stamped "D-311-955-1145", with 150- and 180-gr. bullets, the latter 1.145"long.

It would be nice if they were all the same and logical, but.....

Floodgate

EDIT - PS: Lee's code is perhaps the most useful, as it gives diameter, weight and an indication of the nose profile, with a prefix indcating a tumble-lube ("TL...") or gas-check ("C...") design. (No prefix indicates a plain base bullet with standard grease grooves.)

http://hgmould.gunloads.com/molds/65.jpg

the #65 refers to a 32 S&W Long .312 100gr Pb 65 RGG;OCG;LM;SWS;BB
per this page:

http://hgmould.gunloads.com/casting/hgmoldchart.htm

If it is a 45 cal it is likely a #68,can you double check?

But it'll get you to Lee's site.

I am a newbie at all of this. Years ago I was told to plan with the end in mind. I also know buying quality pays. Before I buy smelting equipment and a mold or two I am reading and reading to figure out how to put this all together on a rather severe budget. The past few days I've considered which Lee and Lyman molds are the ones to fill my needs.

I've settled on ladeling lead from purchased ingots from a soup pot on a hot pot into the mold rather than buying a bottom feed pot which would reduce the purchase price and time thus speed my entry into the casting process.

Since I am planning on casting and reloading for 38 Special and 9mm using round nose and round nose flat point I found the combination of Lee and Lyman molds to do the job. Then tonight I see this list....... woW, wOW, WOW, SO MANY CHOICES. Fantastic list I'm excited to do research on those mold companies to see what is available. Thanks so much.

Ha ha ha ha! I'm afraid it doesn't get easier!. I have been reloading about 12 years and casting maybe 4. I have lots of lead. Almost a ton of lead only wheel weights. JUST when I think I have learned enough to be be fully self reliant, either something new comes along I have to learn (like bullet coating) or just one thread will pop up with information directly in conflict with what I thought I knew!

Getting a late start in life and closing in on 60 I know I dont have a lifetime to learn from experience so I greatly depend on the first hand knowledge of those old timers that have learned that way. There are a handful of men here that even though they do always agree 100% that I can count on what they say.

You are being smart. Start small with what you can afford. Make one or two choices on molds an stick with them. You can always add more later. My very first molds - a .45 & a .312 remain my most used molds by boolit volume. I have added more over time and use them all, but shoot more .45 cast that anything else so that mold gets used. I have a botom pour pot and still ladel pour sometimes.

You got this. Dont make it harder.

Oddly, I prefer Lee, Single cavity molds... that is how i started... and do Not feel like Changing... tho I do own a couple 2 cavity ones...
Anyway... seems Lee "recycled" numbers from the single cavity molds to "newer ones".. causing me much confusion...
Someplace I think there is a numbers list that shows the old single cavity mold numbers..and I would much appreciate that Info...
Thanks Much in Advance!!!

The group buys don't appear to have the buys from the last 10 years. The NOE 429421 and the MP #503 clone are not there. That was the early days for both companies. I don't think MP lists half the molds he has made.

Does anyone have scans of old Lee mold lists from say the 80's ? there are quite a few molds not on the current list and the "specials" that midsouth sells. I recently picked up a used 6 gang TL 314-85-WC. I assume this is probably 30 years old? Also the 6.5 mm, 7mm and 8 mm midsouth molds aren't part of regular catalogs. I have a Lee 90486 numbered mold which I understand is a 429 214 SWC HP mold. The old Lyman mold catalogs are a great resource and was wondering if there was old Lee catalogs scans floating around?

Lee changed numbers like underwear. It is best to refer to a lee mold by weight and caliber as you have done. Further refiners would be TL, and nose profile. I think the 314 wc was dropped in the 90's.
