I picked up two boxes of these a while back to use in my SP 101 .357mag in front of some Clays for messing around.

One thing I noticed is that there does not seem to be any lube on them, there are not even grooves.

Will this lead my 2 1/4" barrel?

Thanks

Ryan,

They are coated with either a micro parafin wax, or some sort of powdered lube. You should be fine as long as you keep them below 1100 fps, esp in that short barrel.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Thanks, they do look funky but I was not sure. I think with the Clays I will be running around 850fps.

I believe Speer's lead boolits are swaged as well, are they not?

Running the Speer swaged lead bullets over about 900 fps is looking for leading. They're plinkers, nothing more. They are made for .38 Spl. velocities as found in factory .38 lead bullet loads. Keep them in that range and you'll do well. They're quite accurate. You should be able to find such loads in your manual(s) even when loaded in .357 cases.

With a fast burning powder like Clays, expect some serious leading if you push them too fast; the powder gas flame cuts the base and leaves the melted lead in the barrel. That's why I always used slower powder for swaged boolits; they can be driven faster without leading because the powder gas is cooler. Try some Unique or SR 4756 with them; you'll probably get better velocity and accuracy.

I picked up the Clays because it was really the only option available locally that I could find data for. Hopefully I can run them slow enough, or should I scrap the idea?

They certainly leaded my bbl. I ended up giving most of them away.
