Another WHAT IS IT?

Going through dad's tools, have seen this tool since I was little, but never thought about asking him what it was, and never once saw him use it. Thought someone on here would know. Thanks.

looks like a crimping tool for snaps that go on clothing or canvas stuff.

I can't see the anvils well enough to be sure, but it looks exactly like the ones I have to set grommets in leather and fabric. These seem to have adjustable grip stops on one handle.
The ones for hose clamps have crossed groves in the anvils to grip the end wires of the clamps.

I found a way to magnify the second pix and OILY IS INDEED CORRECT. Hose clamp pliers made famous with new cars in the early 50s made them necessities for handymen and mechanics.

I was thinking along the same lines as mold maker that they were some sort of a fabric grommet fastener. But looking at a more blown up picture I see that it is indeed an old radiator/heater hose wire clamp pliers. They were a lot easier to use than just plain pliers.

Ding ding ding. Oily is a winner. The ones my dad had, had two sizes of grooves in the anvil, the anvils rotated to adjust for less than convenient positions. Dad also had a pair of slip joint pliers for the same application.

the latch on one handle allows you to hold the spring in the expanded condition so you can slip it over the hose and the connector

Chevy used to use a spring wire hose clamp that you needed those pliers for. Just about everyone who worked at the dealership had a pair. Mine are still in the toolbox,but haven't needed them in years.

I've still got two pairs of those pliers. One resides in my big tool box in my shop. The other rides in my small tool box that I keep in my truck. They are very handy when you need them.

OK, this is reaching back into the mental archives but isn't the wire hose clamp called a "Corbin" clamp or am I thinking of something else? This would have been called a corbin clamp tool.

Looking this up, finds you to be correct. I did not know this.

I have slip joint pliers for these clamps, for use on aircraft engines.

My screen name is a tribute to my first airplane, where I use these very pliers.

Everything is relative, just how much is yet to be learned.
