I have not been having much luck with H4895 so I picked up some H4198 today. Lees load book shows 14-17 grains for a 170 cast . Nothing for a 165. I loaded up some at 15 grains but noticed case is not very full. I am using a BR2 match primer which is a little hotter but not much. Any danger in these or should I pull them? These are not gas checked and I didn't use a filler. I have fired one test shot and everything seems ok but that's one out of 20. I have shot several with 10 grains of Unique but from what I have read it is stable enough to do so. I am trying to keep velocities under 1500 fps to prevent leading in a microgroove until I can find some 170 grain with gas checks.

Shoot them, they are safe enough but they are unlikely to fit the bill. 4198 lights easily but it will be below its prefered pressure range. If you are shooting plain base then little need for anything but unique/reddot type powders. Try 6 gr reddot or stay with your unique. I shoot RL7 which is very like 4198 in my 3030s at 1cc svoop. But that is with gas checked, too fast for plainebase in my experience.

I have been loading 4198 in 3006 and 35 rem. I don't believe either load comes close to filling the cases but I have had no issues. The 35 rem load is actually extremely accurate. I would give it a try and maybe go with a range of loads to see what works. In the 35 I had to be above a certain charge and then my groups suddenly got tiny.

I second the faster pistol powder route as has been mentioned I shoot quite a few plain base in my 32 spl and 5-6 gr of Bullseye does all I need it to for plinker loads red dot and w231 and others in that burn rate will do well too . No need for fillers or wadding to hold the powder in position . Just be aware of accidental double charges in the case with these type of loads . Vel should be in 1000 fps range which is all you really need for these type of loads for 50 yd paper punching .

Hey WendyJ,

I chrono'ed some 30-30 test loads with 165gr NOE mould and H4895 powder. I used gas checks on these since I was trying to find the pressure range where my plain base loads would be safe from leading. All my loads where gas checked, powder coated, and fired out of a Marlin 336 micro groove barrel. NO leading too!

This is my data, my results - USE at your own risk!

Start Grs: AVG FPS:

17.0 - 1,185
17.5 - 1,267
18.0 - 1,216
18.5 - 1,332
19.0 - 1,335
19.5 - 1,416
20.0 - 1,475
20.5 - 1,485
21.0 - 1,528
21.5 - 1,599

I haven't tested for accuracy yet but will in the future. My loads are for ringing steel plates at 100 yards.

I have tried those same loads in a .311 sized bullet with no gas checks. I wish 5 out of 10 shots would hit my 10 inch steel. On paper they look like #4 shot gun shells at 100 yards. I am going to see if I can't seat them a little longer and see if that helps. I am not buying anymore bullets from Missouri bullet since they don't have gas checks. I slugged bore at .3085 to .309.

Using factory 170 cor loc I finally got a 2.8 inch group at 65 yards. I left the firing range and sold it. After over a month of working up re loads I will never own a micro groove barrel again. I wasted too much time and money to find out that's the best it would do. 6 powders and 8 different bullets. Time to call it a wash. Now to get my hands on a 450 bushmaster and start again.

You are misjudging the Micro-Groove barrel. Mine shoots jacketed and the Lee C309-170-FN cast bullet very well indeed, as do many others I know.

Seconded.

The Micro-groove barrel shoots cast bullets well, if sized correctly and alloy matched to velocity. Plenty of information out there, but .310 at BHN 12 - 15 in the 1500 - 1800 fps range can be very accurate.

I don't own mine anymore. I had experimented with lots of bullets and powders for well over a month. My patience was shot out so I sold it. I tried everything from 1200 fps to 2200 fps jacket and lead. I think with range results Saturday I was having throat issues. For a $300 used gun it was just time to give up.
