After having some leading issues in a security six, I slugged it today. The barrel is right at .357. The cylinder throats vary from .3565 to .358. Most appear to be .357 to .3575. So should I get the cylinder throats reamed? What should they be slugging at?

Looking forward to the experts answers here, so i can glean a rule of thumb on this subject.

Best case would be the cylinder throats all slugging at .358. That would give you the extra .001 you need for a good fit to your barrel.

Not certain if this problem effected the security six or not, but some Rugers had a restriction where the barrel went through the frame. This problem by itself could cause some leading.

Knowing the way Ruger made cylinders back in the day, it is not unusual to have chambers two each of three different sizes reamed three at a time and indexed once on the old WW2 era Claussen drills, until the 161- prefix series which were produced on comuterized Hitachi-Seki machining centers. Have DougGuy hone all to match your largest chamber throat or .3585-.3588

Doug did two cylinders for me, from a couple of my Six series revolvers. Both guns stopped leading, and on both the accuracy improved noticeably.

I would recommend having the throats reamed to all one size. That permits you to size the boolits to fit.

Send the cylinder to Doug, he will get them all the same and that should take care of the issue, at that point you size just over throat diameter.

Most appear to be .357 to .3575. Close enough to the groove diameter on most throats. Leave it alone, if shooting at 7 to 25 yards .

For 50 yards, get it adjusted.

I have 1 tight throat i dont use at 50 yards when shooting targets.
