View Full Version : CLOSED: REMAKE - MP Molds - 44 MAG Hollow Base Wadcutter

DukeInFlorida

CLOSED
Because this is a repeat mold, Miha has graciously decided to proceed with machining these molds.
So, this group buy is now moved to the closed area. If you were on the fence about this one, please get in now. While Miha will likely make a few extras, you shouldn't just hope to get one that way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 2010, a LONG 8 years ago, and again in 2014, Miha offered this 44 magnum sized Hollow Base Wadcutter mold, and it sold out pretty quickly. People are still asking for this mold, and Miha's all set to run it again. He has the cherry in inventory to cut cavities. I made a horrible mistake a number of years ago, and sold my mold to one of the CB members. I have regretted it ever since.
It will be a brass mold in two different cavity configurations, a two cavity mold and a four cavity mold. Since this is technically a "nose pour" mold, it's classified as a Hollow Point design with Cramer style pins. Therefore the minimum quantify for a "GO" on this buy is 25 molds. However, there is only ONE pin set for the mold, do NOT ask for custom pins sets. Discounted Group Buy price is 80.75 Euros for the 2 cavity version, and 114.75 Euros for the 4 cavity version For reference, this mold number is 432-395. Miha includes a top punch, and a sample of his special sprue plate lube, and an allen key, all at no additional charge.

I'll need your info:
1) CB Screen Name
2) Quantity of this mold that you desire
3) Disguised email address for invoicing purposes when the molds are ready
4) Your ZIP CODE so that we can advise when molds are shipped (you'll be able to see that your mold is on the way)
5) DHL shipping (three days door to door) is available on this buy IF you desire that option, it will be an additional 6 Euros added to your invoice, $6.83 (US) cost. Please advise, therefore, if you want to pay extra for the DHL shipping. Otherwise, anyone not specifying DHL shipping will have their molds shipped in the normal Postal System way, shipping is free with the mold for normal postal service shipping. Hope that's clear enough.
6) If you buy a handle with this mold, Miha will offer the discounted $20 Euros for the handle set, and the handle will ship with the mold. So, please advise if you want a handle with your order.

What weight bullet is this? I'm interested in it for my 44-40 henry rifle as a target load.

Duke- according to my question of Miha on Sunday, he stated he could put 4-cav on an HP for 45-70. So I would think this 44 would be no problem for 4-cav and would get you to the required 100 pins, faster. I'd jump on this one, if it were 4-cav

All of these calibers have been run more recently than 2010, and in 4C too. I have the whole set.
'Not saying it wouldn't be good to run them again, but they can be done in 4C if wanted.

Thanks for a link I could not find.
Awaiting Miha's reply to the four cavity options for the bigger ones.
His own site only shows these molds in my presented configurations.
I did, inadvertently, leave out the 45 caliber version, which I will add now.

If he blesses the 4 cavity blocks for the bigger molds, then I'll need to get some pricing from him.

According to the drawing that I have, the hollow base version is 235 grains. I'm awaiting confirmation from Miha that he will also offer the plain base pin, which in solid seems to be a 275 grain boolit.

PM received, and replied to. I'll contact you when we get the final details worked out.

We (honchos) seem to have overwhelmed Miha with our detailed questions. He's used to just focusing on making molds, and getting them out quickly. We are forcing him to also be a good manager of details.

Need some help. No stranger to casting but know nothing about this custom mold stuff. Ist question is how much is a Euro? Second question. This 44 HBWC is not a GC bullet, right?
Guidence will be appreciated.

DukeInFlorida

A EURO is the common money in Europe. The value of one (relative to a US dollar) varies daily, although it doesn't really vary all that much. Since MP-Molds is in Slovenia, Miha does his billing in EUROS. If you pay the invoice through PayPal, then PayPal does the exchange rate automatically, and you will actually pay in US dollars.
Here's a link for the exchange rate from EUROS to dollars (https://www.dollars2euro.com/)
Currently, a EURO is $ 1.1754 dollars.

This bullet is a "nose pour" style bullet, meaning that the normal Hollow Point (which is on the nose of the bullet) in this instance becomes the rear of the bullet. Because the rear of the bullet is HOLLOW, a gas check would not work.

Do you want a two cavity mold? Or, a four cavity mold? Those are the only two options.
So, the Lyman 4 cavity handles DO NOT fit these molds. The LEE four cavity handles DO FIT. I've never had any RCBS handles, so I am not sure on those. The difference is mostly the THICKNESS of the metal part where it fits into the slots on the sides of the molds. These molds require something the same thickness as a LEE handle set.

With regard to the "disguised email address". . . . There are dangerous "BOTS" roaming web sites, looking to lift (steal) data such as email addresses. They can use those email addresses to send out viruses, etc. So, as an attempt to foil the bots, we ask that you modify your email address slightly. The @ symbol becomes the word, "AT". And the period (.) in front of your email provider information becomes a "DOT"

So, if your email address was somebody@somewhere.com, you would post your email address as: somebody AT somewhere DOT com
Hopefully, the bots are dumb enough to not glean your email address, and you won't get deluged with trash. Hope that helps you and others who were confused about the nature of a disguised email address.

DukeInFlorida
10-18-2018, 11:21 AM
Jtarm,
Yes, that is ten total molds that are now committed for. However, that does not make this an active buy.

When Miha creates the bits and pieces for these molds, he HAS to plan on 100 cavity sets (the pins) as a minimum. In a four cavity mold, that is 4 per, so a minimum order commitment of half of 25 is what is really needed to go active. We do have a couple of additional 2 cavity versions committed to, so for all practical purposes, we need 13 or so total commitments for this mold to go active. The moderator of this area is the decider of when they actually go active. We're close, but not there yet.

You might want to actually re-read the entire offering posting, especially:
"This will be a brass, with two cavity options, 2 cavity and 4 cavity molds. Since this is technically a "nose pour" mold, it's classified as a Hollow Point design with Cramer style pins. Therefore the minimum quantity for a "GO" on this buy is 20 molds. However, there is only ONE pin set for the mold, do NOT ask for custom pins sets. Discounted Group Buy price is 80.75 Euros for the TWO cavity version, and 114.75 Euros for the FOUR cavity version. Hollow base pin, and blank pin is included in the price, and the price includes standard postal service delivery."

In the above quote, "GO" meant the actual production run, not the process of going active.

Don't be disheartened. I'm hoping that the 44 mag shooters among us (and the shooters for the other similar sizes of the Hollow Base Wadcutters that are in Discussion) will soon discover that they can get in on this buy. And, once it does go active, the production should be quick. While this is a repeat production run, Miha has to plan on these cavities (pins) each and every individual time.

Welcome to this group buy. It's wise to always be checking the discussion area. It's where ALL group buys begin! They only ever get moved to the active area if enough people sign up. So, only checking the active area is missing lots of great casting opportunities.

I have added your order. Thanks.

we need 12 more cavities to get this thread moved to active area. So, that's 3 more four cavity molds, or some combination with the other cavity configuration. 100 cavities is what we need for production. Half of that is needed (as a minimum) to go from discussion to active.

If you would like one of these light 45's, sign up now, with no money laid out until the molds are ,made, and ready to ship.

This one still has a chance.
However, we still need a few more to get it into the ACTIVE area.
It needs 50 cavities (1/2 of the 100 hollow point cavities that it takes for any and all HP molds to get made) to get moved to ACTIVE. The Active ar4ea is where most people look. So, any of you already on this list, Thank You. But, spread the word.

So close to going active.

We need a few more orders to get there. Otherwise, it will go to the dead letter office.

This is an amazing mold. I have the 45 version and the 357 version of this mold. They are both amazing.
I REALLY need this one to complete the set.

Just few more cavities and we'll have the 50 cavities that are needed to get this ACTIVE. Please?

Just looked at a few of my recent purchases from MP-Molds. The allen screws are in the mold blocks, and facilitate the attachment of the handles. That is what the allen wrench (he includes) is for. Sorry for the earlier confusion about the allen wrench.

So, in addition to the mold, Miha also incudes:
1) A allen wrench for installing handles (handles are sold separately)
2) Top Punch for pushing the mold through the lubricizer (others charge for that top punch, Miha includes it!)
3) Small sample of high temp mold lube. I use it on the mold pivot pin, and wipe some on the underside of the sprue cutter plate, and also on top of the mold <after cutting sprue, but before dropping castings> to help prevent "soldering" of lead on the cutter and mold. It's very similar to what used to be sold as "Bull Plate Lube"

None of my MP molds need an allen key to assemble pins. Is this something new?

UPDATE: Miha got right back to me, and perhaps "fixed" it... I then retried (using Opera) and it seemed to work. I was able to send funds with PayPal and got acknowledgement from them. So, it looks like it's good to go! (I ;)) hope.

PROBLEM! I received invoice, and tried three different browsers to try and make payment for my mould plus one set of handles. No-go for me. I sent an email:

SIR: I attempted to purchase/pay for this mould and one set of handles. When I get to payer information page, the screen blinks on and off, and I am unable to add any (my name, address, etc.) information. I was using Opera, and thinking the browser may not be compatible, then tried Mozilla Firefox with identical results. I then tried Internet Explorer -- and still could do all UNTIL I tried inserting my name, address, and other information.

I DO wish to purchase this mould and one set of handles for it.

Please advise how I may so do?

I was able to pay just fine, but all my previous account history (wish list and direct purchases) are missing.

2 mistakes people are doing......

1. Please check that you agree with terms and conditions (open your eyes - not just clicking)

2. If you are putting in zip code use only main zip (12345 format and not this one 12345-12345) - this is dhl problem

I bought four 4-cav HBWC moulds during the 2014 buy: The .44, .41, .38 and the one that's missing from the OP diagrams, the .32. Miha went out of his way and made a .310 version for me. It throws about 100 grains at .311, cleans up very nicely in a .310 sizer, and they work great at the .32S&WL level in my .30 Blackhawks. The throats in my .32-20 1905/4 are about .311 so I'll be sizing some for it and its sister Browning 53 as well. Then I bought a Miculek M25-8 and a Mountain Gun and a couple Blackhawks in .45 LC, so when the .45 HBWC became available again, I grabbed one. The boolits from it will be loaded in .45 Colt and .45 Auto Rim.
These HBWCs are excellent in all calibers I've tried. They are easily as good as the discontinued hard swaged Meister .38s and the Magnus version, and come in calibers where it's hard to find HBWCs. There's a reason the .38 HBWC is ubiquitous in .38 match ammo. Now you can have that edge in your other calibers as well. In my comparisons, the hollow base generally outperform their solid base counterparts. They also make excellent cup-point manstoppers when loaded reversed, because they are the same diameter for their entire length and the flat, full caliber nose makes a fine plain flat base with a scant bevel. For those wondering about the Allen wrenches, the legs for the HB pins have an Allen cavity in the rear or E-clip end, as do the handle screws and the sprue plate screw and its setscrew. Also, I just received my first aluminum M-P mould, and it has Allen setscrews for the sprue pivot and sprue stop bolts, and the contact spot for the sprue cam lever is an Allen bolt.
This is your chance to get one of these and treat your revolvers to the best boolits around. If you're on the fence about buying this mould, jump off on the 'buy' side.

CLOSED

Because this is a repeat mold, Miha has graciously decided to proceed with machining these molds.
So, this group buy is now moved to the closed area. If you were on the fence about this one, please get in now. While Miha will likely make a few extras, you shouldn't just hope to get one that way.

Yay, I got my DHL notice. Mold will be here tomorrow.

Thanks, Miha. It's beautiful thing. My set is complete again (38 cal, 44 cal, and 45 cal)
I wonder if we all need a 500 mag sized hbwc?
