The title says it all. I'm too old to change the way I spell, but which spelling is correct, and which does everyone prefer?

They are both correct...'mould' comes from older English, I think...the computer dictionary recognizes mold as a hollow container to give shape to molten metal and at the same time you go to Wikipedia and it says mold is a fungus...I prefer mould as it is the way I was taught last century...

Mould calls up just the tool for me, but mold also calls up black slime. I use mould here and elsewhere if talking about bullet casting. I mean, jeez, if we can spell it boolit, certainly we can get away with a Queen's English rendition of mould.

I was pondering that very same question...amazing how great minds think alike !
I don't care what's politically correct or what that wikipeedia says here is the way I learned it and I'm not going to tell my teachers they were wrong...cause they aren't.

Mold - the green stuff that grows on bread , cheese that's been in the ice box too long and what they make penicillin from.

Mould - What I cast boolits, sinkers and fishing jigs in. Lyman, RCBS and NOE all refer to them as moulds ....so that's what they are. ( only Lee calls them molds but what does he know)
I will now and forever more call them boolit moulds.

Mouldings is still used in upper end architecture,BTW.

Mould is English. Mold is American. Depends on which side of the pond you are.

Similar thing goes for cast vs casted. I have cast many boolits. I like to cast boolits. I will cast more tomorrow. All are correct in today's modern pros. Casted............not so much.

"I cast my fishing line into the air.............not planning to catch my derriere.
If I had casted, maybe perchance............I would not have snagged my underpants!"

As a kid we had four channels. ABC, CBS, NBC and Canada something. I grew up with colour, sulphur, and other English pronunciations as the cartoons were on the Canadian channel.

Since every place I've purchased a mold from calls them bullet molds, I call them molds.

We use a mould to cast bullets. Mold is that black stuff that grows in damp places.

In today's millennial acronym world...we should just call them CBM for Cast Bullet Mould (Mold) (M)....

I really don't care how we spell it or what we call them...mold is faster to type cuz its got one less letter....and my spelling $ucks anyway. I ain't none to good at gramer neither. But me english makes me what I are.

Mold, taters, maters, samich, If ya know what I mean. Otherwise, I can be as proper as anyone but have gotten lazy in my old age.
If I offend anyone, there is always the ignore list, and I wont even know.

When I read your comment above I couldn't help but think of a popular rhyme from my high school days ...

Today's Bright Kids

Go to college to continue your knowledge ...
To become a person bright, brave, and true ...
For if they can make Penicillin from moldy old bread ...
SURELY they can make something out of YOU!

If the Ideal catalog used the word 'moulds' in 1897 - believe they knew what they were advertising

I always thought "mold" was proprietary to this particular forum, just like "boolit". I tend to use "mold" and "boolit" when posting on this forum and "mould" and "bullet" for the rest of the world. I hadn't realized Lee used "mold" to describe their product until reading this thread. Went and looked and -- sure enough, they do that. I know some folks would say "well -- yeah!" but I am actually a Lee fan. Or at least of their 6-cavity model.

Always learning something hanging around here!

I call them molds. Don’t really matter. Everyone here should know what is meant. Kind of like the reference to smelting.

nvbirdman,

MOULD is for bullets; MOLD grows on things, like leftover bread for example.

Well if you've got a mold growing on your bread, you should turn a tidy profit, but I wouldn't advise eating it.

That is exactly correct. And when talking about the old tools it is correct to use the proper term, mould.
We, ARTCA, have added mould to the writers style guide when publishing articles.

Either... I figured mold was the most popular version but it appears to be pretty evenly split. I didn't even realize NOE uses the term mould and I've bought from numerous times.

Lyman & NOE use mould
Lee, MP, Accurate use mold
RCBS uses both.

Old School = Mould; New School = Mold!
correct English = mould
incorrect English = mold
(in reference to casting, not spoiled food items).

Talking about miss used English, have you really looked at some of the handles we accept without giving it a thought? Some of them are the spelling police making all the noise.

Just to add a visual reference, mold or mould from a 1928 Belding & Mull catalog. To them it's a mold.
