View Full Version : 2 Recyclle shops refused to sell me lead.

I drove to my favorite recycle shop today and the attendent said that he could no longer sell lead to the public. The attendent didn't know why. So I drove down the street to the next recycle shop and he refused to sell me lead today also.

The attendent said it is because led sinkers have been banned and since most people buy lead to make sinkers they were probibited from selling lead to the public. What a sad day, no WW available from tire shops and no lead available from the recycle center. :(

I am located in Texas, anyone esle had problems buying lead in Texas?

I'd be curious as well about where all lead cannot be obtained anymore. When I was in Kalifornia a few months ago it was a "dry state".

If you haven't "Got Yours" by now, meaning a stash of wheel weights weighing about a ton or so, you may very well have to resign yourselves to using Kirksite/Zamak #3 zinc diecast alloy. That or not shoot anymore. It is gonna happen unless a miracle of legislation happens quick.

My experience has been - I traveled to about 20 different tire shops and recycle scrap yards. The scrap yards flat turned me down stating that they no longer sold to the public. The tire shops said they already had someone getting lead from them. I was quite put down to say the least. I figured it was because I was asking if they just wanted to get rid of it. I then returned to a few tire shops I had previously went to and offered cash. The attitude immediately changed and they sold me some. Total that day was about 400 pounds of wheel weights for about 40 cents a pound. Personnel at the tire shops now are quite aware that lead brings money if they take it to the scrap yards but are more than happy to SELL it to me so they don't have to haul it themselves.

I figured the 40 cents a pound into price per 500 rounds and it is still very cheap compared to commercial bullets.

It may cost you a bit more, but you should be able to buy pigs of lead at a plumbing supply house. Forget Lowe's and Home Depot. I'm talking about commercial plumbing supply houses. They should have lead in 25lb. chains of 5 lb. pigs.

I agree.
I have paid $60.00 per bucket for WW. After rending the clips and junk I paid 38 cents a pound. I'ma newb so I didn't get used to getting them for free.

Jim,
Buy lead as a company. Print up some cards with "dive weights r us" or some such.
Hope you have better luck in the future.

All right. Here is the tack to take.

Every shooter in the US needs to own a muzzle loader of some sort. Doesn't have be in working order or even capable of firing. As muzzle loaders require 'lead' (don't get into alloy discussions) the administration pushing the anti lead mission is then preventing you operating your ML. As such they are encroaching on your rights under the 2nd amendment. So, you have the RIGHT to purchase 'lead'.

How does that stack?

Don't waste your time with the attendant. He's only doing what he was told to do, and isn't going to get himself into trouble bucking the boss. Before you go scrapper next time, call first and ask to speak with the manager. The boss will tell you who to ask for, which day, the best time of day to buy and $/lb. And when it comes to price, be prepared, you're gonna get gouged. Period.

Sounds good at first, but knowing how politicians (especially the anti 2A types) think, they'll want to require licenses, permits, training, hazmat certification, taxes, fees....ad nauseum.

I'm still getting free lead from two tire shops. I have been trying to stockpile as much as possible. I have benn getting it for about six months and have around 700 pounds.

You can get lots of free lead at the range laying on top of the berms. But I don't recommend digging unless the range owners say it's ok.

Good grief, here we go. Only a government diktat could produce something as bizarre as a company having to refuse business.

Go to "swappin & sellin" and ask. Someone i'll bet will sell you WW alloy or Soft lead fo ~ $1/lb shipped 50 lbs in a USPS box right to your doorstep. There is always someone that can cut into their stash for a fellow caster in need and could us a little cash.

There are several 50# lots of lead on Ebay that are going without bids one 60# in a flat rate box starting at $48 + shipping. If you are desparate there is lead available.
If it is against the law to sell lead to the public then the Ebay links would be shut down. I think that it is a question of someone is paying the scrap dealer in question more than you are going to pay or someone has agreed to buy it all if he doesn't sell to everyone that comes in. A steady customer is better than a once or twice a year customer.

Quote: If it is against the law to sell lead to the public then the Ebay links would be shut down. Unquote.

And you can expect that to happen pretty soon. Ebay tries hard to avoid lawsuits and eventually they will tumble to the idea that there are certain places who are trying to control (outlaw) distribution of lead and will try to distance themselves from any possible connection to it. Enjoy it while you can.

I've had a hard time finding much lately as well. Most of the tire shops won't sell it as they have someone that picks up the wheel weights.

I did a check of the market price this morning and it is going for $.85 #

I have a deal with a guy for 200 #s at .75 #. A little pricey, but I want to stock up myself. Don't know if I will take the offer. I wonder if he will take .40 a #?

What market are you looking at? New lead in ingots maybe. For scrap lead.
Todays mixed lead LTL (less than truck load) is 0.37 for TL it's 0.61
wheel weights 0.25 LTL .41 TL

If wheel weights are sold at the yard they pay about 5 cents a pound. To buy them back you may pay TL price but they'll ask for more. Of course they don't have to sell you anything.

I need ot go get half ton of soft lead scrap this week. Getting low. I buy fresh bullet alloy from Lawrence about two hours drive away. $1.30 for the last 2/6 I bought but price has fallen a little since then. That's with the 10 cent discount for volume.

just goolge scrapindex dot com

The EPA requires all lead to be recycled and proper documentation for the lead transactions. Many chain tire shops will not sell lead to you unless you are an authorized recycler. Recyclers are doing much the same.
Of course, many people don't know of the requirements or simply ignore it so much material is still available for the asking or barter. Nonetheless, some of the Socialist States of America (who didn't have the decency to sucede) are rather dilligent about tracking down those who would allow dangerous materials into the hands of those without reams of documentation. They figure if you can't get people to do something then you can bury them in paperwork.

First, let me be the first to say, welcome to the board!

Second, hogwash like the above doesn't fly here. The EPA requires no such thing.

I went to the scrap yard today in Phoenix to get rid of brass that has been filling up a 5 gallon bucket for the past few years. I only made $75 for 50 lbs but that will by more lead.

So from now on I'm going to be a brass hog at the range and pick up what other people leave. It pays for my .22 ammo or for at least 50 lbs of lead whee weights.

I had read on one of my fishing boards that Texas had passed something about lead sinkers and what weights they could or couldn't be but damned if I could find anything on it. I checked the TX fish and wildlife site and nothing and I'm waiting on a few friends from down there to let me know what's going on.

I personnally have never paid for lead or wheel weights, and even with the idiot laws on sinkers and split shot here in Vermont I have two places I get tire weights from for free, saves them the hassle and gives me the lead.

I keep hearing that story about banning lead sinkers here in Texas but no verification. I don't fish but needed some leader cable for another project and while in the store I did notice that the bins of sinkers were gone and packages had replaced them. I did notice that they do not appear to be lead, having a brighter finish.

I get my wheel weights from a local tire shop for $5.00 per half 5 gal bucket. I do have to go to the manager because the workers have been told the Haz-Mat story and will not make the sale. The manager told me that he had been ordered by corporate headquarters that wheel weights must go to an authorized recycler but if he sells to me he has no paperwork to hassle with. He likes less paperwork. It appears that there is no law about wheel weights but instead it is one of those industry wide policies. Maybe they are trying to be 'good neighbors' and preempt any legislation? Also might be bean counter accountants who try to squeeze every penny out of business and see lost profit in not officially recycling / disposing.

PS: checked with Wally World Auto/tire dept and they had a memo from headquarters to not sell / give / etc WW because they were HazMat. Funny because they are notorious about their WW falling off the same day you get your tires changed. That sure spreads them through the environment along the roadside more than my shooting into a backstop!

I've worked manufacturing all my adult life. Every place I've worked they didn't want to let any employee out the door with anything. They'd trash it to send to the land fill before they'd let you take it home. Just bean counter BS. Afraid you may spend a minute or two of their time collecting stuff up.

One day I spent four hours cutting safety chain up into six inch length with a torch to discourage anyone from taking some home. When I recieved that job order I comented "best idea I"ve heard all week". After I was finished they pink slipped me for insubordination. Never underestimate the stupidity of a corporation. Or their determination to let you know they regard you as a ***. You can read a two thousand year old book and it was the same back then too. Best not to think on it to much or your head will explode.

One of the other threads was about states banning lead bullets for hunting. Someone there observed that old civil war battlefield sites had lots of environmental lead laying around and questioned what the long term heath of the local residents was. Think about it, we dont hear any stories about how sick they are and that is about the most intense concentration of bullets I can imagine. The do gooders are going to roll over us if we don't start taking a stand. Some environmental cleanup has been good but they take it to ridiculous extremes.

I read that the smoke coming from a coal powered electrical generator station was highly toxic with heavy metals and even radon gas. It supposedly settles out within 400 miles downwind and downwind of some old eastern power plants have levels high enough to cause birth defects from vegetables grown in the soil, asuming the mother eats them every day for a few years. That is something to wory about, not the relative few bullets spread by us shooters.

I been thinking{opps} how is this idea we can start casting aluminum boolits from beer cans. There are plenty of them. They are lighter[carry moreammo]so you would save on powder. You dont need to lube[saves time thinking of all this better lube stuff] Molds will be cheaper[no lube grooves] Dont have to worry about 1in groups[after 24 cans are empty{for the boolits} who cares] Just thinking shotman

I retired from a Fortune 500 company that used to allow employees to take scrap home. They finally put a stop to it because the employees were found to be declaring stuff as "scrap" that was good usable stuff. Once again, a few bad apples ruined it for the rest.

Good day to you all, I love this forum! What is a good pound to pound mix of clip on WW to lead that will give 16 binell? Are folks still adding tin? I have a Rockwell tester and was thinking of making a very shallow "China hat" type indenter for it, then the problem would be finding a sample to use as a standard.

Pure clip on WW are only 10-12 BHN, so you can't get 16 with a lead/WW mix unless you heat treat.
