Hi all - Working on some other things right now, but once I get those done I want to work on the next set of problems - So I am looking for a few of each of certain cases, to make shotshells for certain calibers... We'll have to discuss how to ship and costs etc. on these, one disaster at a time though :P

So I am looking for about 10-12 or so of each of these cases (sometimes any of several cases will do, and these can be neck cracked cases or the like, as I will be shortening the cases to make them just shorter than the cylinders...) 14 of the 357 ones I think. Taurus is a 7-shooter :)

.357 Mag: .357 Super Magnum

.44 Mag: .410 shotshell brass case OR .303 British case OR .444 Marlin case OR .445 Super Mag case OR 30-40 Krag case

.45 Colt: 7.62x54R Russian case

(I am thinking I can fake a 9mm shotshell maybe by modifying a .223 case? Have to look at that. Probably can do the same for 380 Auto, with more work.)

It just sounds like fun, once I get the darn "my table the press is supposed to mount to, doesn't work worth beans" issue I'm dealing with. Grinder stand should do it, just woodwork to do to set that up.

I'm not in a huge hurry, it will be ~2 weeks before I need these, if not more. Just thinking on this,

I can send you a dozen 444 Marlin cases. If the headstamp matters to you, I will have to go look at them after while. PM me an address and I'll get them off to you.

I have a lot of .303Brit.
I'd be happy to send you 15, no charge.
For .45Colt you can also use 30-40Krag, or .307Win.

For 357mag I was thinking maybe 360DW or 357MAX.

How you doing on 45acp? I’ve had to stomp a few this year, would rather shoot once they get over a couple feet long.

Lightman - Thank you! I'll PM you next :)

blltsmth - Thanks :)

nvbirdman - Thanks :)

And GRUMPA - Thanks too :)

Case head stamps don't matter much for these, good point. While I'm picky on that on varmint rifles, on shot shells about all I'd do is specify brass cases, "no incipient case head separations" and no primer pockets that are Berdan primed, or so loose that the primer will fall out easily. The shot shells are a low precision device, by comparison to varmint / target rifles; For 357 I'll have to make my own shot cups too, that is already documented on here tho :) I have SP410 wads for 44 / 45 already. (Also I don't find a sparse pattern at 15 yards a problem - Even with a big diamondback rattler, if they're 15 yards away they're not much of a threat! 2 yards is a different matter though.)

chill45100 and sghart3578 - I am making these like the 45 Auto shot shells, where the shot is contained in the "bullet space" where a boolit would normally go, only they are in a longer case and you cannot load a boolit in these cases, just shot; for an example in 45 Auto look at http://www.ammochannel.com/45-acp-shotshells-handloaded/ - So the brass is maybe 1/2 inch or longer than a 45 Colt or 357 usual case, and that extension is small enough to fit inside the cylinder, just short of cylinder length, on revolvers. (On the .45 Auto it acts as the "boolit" for feeding purposes, also.) Thanks for trying to help, definitely appreciated :) I have a few 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 cases so I am set on those, for 45 Auto and 9mm / 380, I'm told they may not eject, well if that's a problem we'll figure out an answer.
It looks like I have everything but the .357 Super Magnum once these arrive, for now it's time to get back to the Press Table fixup, it's COLD here today so I'll make it fast while outside. (Hail in the Seattle area, usually our sunshine we get here is more of a liquid variety, but hail and snow do happen.) May even just do the needed drilling indoors, might be smarter than outdoors, today.

Had a thought too, 3d printed shot cups could be interesting... May try that later.

I have a bunch of 54r. I'll send you a handful of them no charge. PM me your info. I also have a few thousand .223 if you want me to send you a few of those as well to try 9mm and .380 shotshells.

JimB - 360DW is a good thought! I didn't know of that case. hmmm :) My first press table attempt failed miserably, leverage issues, then the flu of doom nailed me, ended up in hospital for 8 days; LOTS better now. (I look bad in "cyanotic blue" i.e. when I can't breathe well...) Going to get the next try at a table set up this week; It should work far better. I hate living in apartments, no room and they don't want me lag bolting things to the wall & floor; So unreasonable! Sorry for the delay, need to get you those!

Bareen, someone else already PMed me an offer for some, thank you though :)

For .45 Colt, could you use brass .410 casings?

Rattlesnake Charlie - That's a good question / interesting idea; I haven't bought a 45 Colt wheelgun yet, it is definitely possible though, I shall look into that. I don't have anything in 410 at this point; planned to just use 7.62x54R Russian cases for it.

Looking at the SAAMI drawings, 45 Colt cases are 0.480 cylindrical, 410 shells are .4770 -.0090 at the base, front end is .462 -.014 and I would think that would be NO problem to fire form! If you used 410 shotshell cases for both 44 Rem Mag & 45 Colt you'd want to be sure to not randomly trade them back & forth, but Sharpie Markers work well for marking brass (at least till you steel pin / citric acid clean them.) I'd use the resistor color code, two yellow dots for 44 & yellow then green for 45, but I'm an Electronics fiend :)

Rattlesnake Charlie - Thank you. I "should" be covered but can always PIF those I don't need; Might be interesting to do things a couple different ways.

nvbirdman - Great :) TY!

I may need to buy more dies to form these. So tragic :p

I had a passing (maybe scary) thought - I wonder what'd happen if I tossed a lube groove in a shot cup? Would it help the round get better velocity, or ???

I have six casings for .44 mag that reach all the way to the end of the cylinder. They hold close to 1/2 oz shot. I started with .444 Marlin brass, annealed it good, then ran into the .44 mag sizing die. Annealed it again, lubed them good, and tapped them into the revolver cylinder. Had to file the rim thickness down quite a bit, then re-swage the primer pocket. Again, annealing was required. I was not worried about weakening the brass as I was using it for shot loads. Way big improvement of CCI shot loads.

Interesting way of sizing the brass; I'd guess you used lube probably! Annealing is a good idea, I have LP gas and MAPP torches so I'm set for that part. Rims I'll probably have to hand file or something. I need to move and get a shop! Hopefully before I go nuts from not having a shop.

{I had a full inbox - and NOW I know that you can't just move messages unto another folder, to clear up space you have to delete them. Fixed it for now, at least.}
