I would like to load 200 gr LSWC in my .45 Colt Stampeder. Do any of you use wither of the following bullets in the .45 Colt. I will be using two designs either the Lyman 452460 or the 225 gr Lyman 452374. Since neither bullet has a crimping grove where would you suggest I place the crimp?

I have used a 195 SWC target bullet that is for the 45acp and out of a Lyman mould with very good sucess in my 45 Long Colt. As in the 45acp I crimped it right behind the full caliber shoulder about 1/32 of an inch and it doesn't have to be a real heavy crimp. I have that 225 gr Lyman mould too and being a round nose you have to make sure that you don't seat it so deep that you are past the full caliber diameter of the bullet because crimping then will just force it deeper into the case . Same with it as if you used it in a 45acp, light to medium crimp. If your alloy is real hard this presents no problem. Another solution is to taper crimp.

If you are using cowboy loads, seat and then crimp in the middle of the top band. A firm, but not hard, crimp works fine. Either taper crimp or roll crimp for this application. If the boolits tend to recoil out of their seating depth, via checking the 5th or 6th round before firing them, consider using an expander plug which is 0.001-0.002 smaller in diameter rather than crimping harder. ... felix

452460 shoots awesome out of my 45 colt. I crimp on the front groove.

Robert, the old gunsmith I used to go to when I was a lot younger, shot literally TONS of 200 gr. SWC's in his .45 Colts, and he always used Unique. A buddy has also gotten some really accurate loads with Red Dot, also. I doubt you can miss with either of those powders. The Red Dot's probably a little cheaper, if you plan to shoot a lot of them, and my buddy got some REALLY good groups with his gun, but it had .452" throats and a .4515" grooved barrel, and it jes' doan git no better'n that. His gun shot .454's and .452's with equal accuracy. Rascal went and SOLD it, without even telling me! Can't complain, though. He got WAY more than I'd have given him. Sure hate to see a "good one" pass me by, though. That thing shot like it had eyes!

Unique is all I used to shoot my 200 SWC's out of my Ruger but I didn't mention it because I figured you fellows were tired of hearing Unique Unique Unique out of me. Did I mention I used Unique?

With a 200gr bullet in a CAS load I use 5gr of titewad and I'm getting 775fps with a standard primer.

I have come down to a 155gr swc bullet since starting the cowboy action shooting with my Ruger Vaqueros. Now I'm shooting 3.5gr of titewad at 550 fps and load density is still not an issue. I set the oal of the 200gr at 1.595 and the 155gr at 1.635.

Both shoot great.

I like the popgun effect of the 155 when shooting gunfighter style.

More fun and cheaper too.
