Just got a email from midsouth shooters supply that lymann is recalling their side locks for breech failures. They gave a serial number range that were effected.

Thank you for posting the serial number range.
Sure hope my .40 bore with 16" twist isn't in there somewhere.

Whew!!!! A595201 here. Close!!!!! I paid to have mine slow rust blued (8 coats) and it would have been sad to send that one back.

I wonder if it stops with Lyman products? Lyman, Interarms, Cabelas, Kassnar and possibly others were alleged to have been made by the same manufacture.

it's NOT a "lyman product" - the lyman rifles are rebranded investarms guns, which are also rebranded as cabelas, DGW, and others.

the problem is with the breech plug, not the barrel itself. they want the barrel back because most people can't remove the plug. so in yer case, if you had a bad plug, they'd just replace that and that plug would need the rust bluing.

Thanks, rfd. 'Glad I don't have to do that either. 8-)

RFD & BOZ330,
I'm not about to loose any sleep over this. What happens, well, happens. Eventually I'll get my rock lock and all will be good. I ordered mine from TOTW. Have a good one!

I'm not that worried about it. This is my down time and a good time to have a project. Several years ago I had to put a finishing shot on a ML deer and it would have been nice to have a powerful back up. My hunting partner was surprised to hear a back up shot so quick after the first but it seemed like it took forever to me. I don't want any game I shoot to suffer for any length of time.

Just received mine the SN is 600+ earlier than listed. I went for the 54 and I would think that the 50cal would be more popular.

I just got an email on this one and I had *just* read a post of a member here who had this exact problem. Brand new GPR and the breechplug blew out! Was searching for his post but I think Lyman was going to give him a new rifle..

kudos to investarms and lyman for reporting the breech plug issue, and making righteous amends to their customers. doo-doo happens to the best of guns and we've all seen recalls for very notable brand firearms. this current breech plug issue wouldn't sway me from getting yet another investarms trad muzzleloader, as i still consider investarms as the better buy of all the offshore trad ml brand guns. ymmv ;)

You must not own one Tommie. You spelled Lyman wrong.
I live in a highly populated area north of Detroit Michigan and none of the big boy hunting stores even sell the Lyman pistol here - nor have they sold them around here in the past 20 years. Not even Cabela's two stores that existed here in the past 20 years or-so.

I'm betting this recall effects so few here in Michigan. But to those handful that might have a Lyman pistol here, bought from places like Dixie Gun Works across the country, thanks for the heads-up.
