I have a trash can of ww lead in my garage, and mixted in it are a lot of the stick on ww's. You know,....., little square, they come on a plastic strip, and are stick on...

Can anyone tell me what they are ?

Pure lead ?
Alloy ?

How do they compair to regular ww metal ?

Thanks

They are softer and near pure. Good for MLs. You can mix them with regular WWs to stretch them out more. Use for pistols that shot at a slower fps like 45 auto.

Buy a roll of lead free plumber's solder from Home Depot or Lowe's and mix it with 20 pounds of your stick-ons.

1+ on the roll of lead free plumber's solder. Some of my best groups have been shot with an alloy of 20 lbs of pure lead to 1 lb of lead free solder(tin). It gives a nice fill out on the moulds, and is soft enough to obturate and seal the bore when fired.

Or better yet, just box up all of those little stick on suckers and send them to me. I will recycle them for ya. LOL

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Make sure the solder is 95/5 and not 50/50. If it's 50/50 it will be 2 lbs. to 19 of the WWs.

You may run into a couple steel and zink. Or watch your temp and skim any if they seem to float longer than lead ones. I go thru mine if they look funny they get tested with a small wire cutter, dent easily- good, won't dent- they get tossed.

95/5 is 95% tin and 5% antimony. 50/50 is 50%lead and 50% tin. The most common lead free solder these days is 95%tin, 4% copper and the last bit is either silver or selenium, depending on manufacturer. The silver and selenium is used as a catalyst to bond the copper to the tin.

Jim,

Sounds like you described Laser-Cast's secret formula!

Joe,

I do the same thing with my wheel weights. 1 roll of 95/5 solder from Home Depot and 19lbs of once fluxed wheelweights. Makes for some good bullets.

I've found LOTS of Zinc, steel and alloy stick ons recently.

About three years ago I tested all the different shapes/styles I could find and found 5-6 BHN to 18-20 BHN and everything in between.

Since then I've found increasing numbers of floaters and magnetic stick-ons and no longer consider them "soft lead".

I spent 32 years as a pipefitter and plumber before I retired from the trade. When I started as a helper, ALL WE HAD was 50/50. I've watched all these "new fangled" solders come on the market and tried 'em all. 'Bout the best I found for solderin' pipe and addin' to the mix is one called Sterling made by a company called Taramet.
I try not to wave my flag too much, but I know my solders.
