View Full Version : 38 Super Mold Suggestion

I am in the process of buying my first mold for 38 Super. I am interested in a 125-130 gr SWC design. I have seen one on NOE’s website (358-128 SWC PB) as well as one from MP molds (359-125 HP PB).

This mold will primarily be for 38 Super using clip on WW at moderate speeds. I am not trying to make major PF, hence the lighter weight bullet. I am sure I will load a few for 9 MM as well. Does anyone have any direct experience with either of these two molds? Is there another mold of similar design you would recommend?

Thanks,
TB

Could a moderator move this thread to the Mold forum? I put it in the wrong place.

Thanks!

I don't think there's any wrong with this subforum for your topic, but I appreciate your wanting to follow the rules.

I am also interested in this question, I was also thinking something in the way of a SWC (if it feeds OK) or maybe a truncated cone for full-power 38 Super loads (but also not major, like Two Barrels). I haven't reloaded cast for 38 Super yet, simply for lack of time, but that situation is changing.

Would love to hear from experienced 38Super cast loaders.

My STI open gun loves the LEE 356-120TC

The tried and true 356402 mold from Lyman/Ideal replicates the original 9x19 german WWI bullet and most alloys keep it between 120-124gr in bullet weight.

I have been using the Lyman 358480 pattern in the Super 38 for several years. This out-of-production mold is available through auction sites, or one can order this or a similar pattern from several of the fine mold makers we speak of on this site. Lyman stated the mold will cast at 133 grains but I regularly see a very slightly heavier weight (around 135 gr.) with mine made from ACWW. I routinely size these at .358" and apply LsStuff's BAC lube. His site is at the bottom of the Cast Boolits front page. I taper crimp at the middle of the forward driving band, and confirm with a plunk test. My Colt Commander, pre-70 series, absolutely loves this boolit. Groups match the sights and are tight. These boolits have never tied up the action of my pistol, and if they were to do so I would not recommend them.

the Lee 356-120TC (lube grooves) is my fav 9 & super 38. Also use Lyman 356402 with very good results. I tried the Lyman 358480 20+ years ago, it was not accurate for me. Tried it again ( newer mold ) a few years ago, still not very accurate in my guns. 356-120 tops them all.

I have used Saeco #924 two holer for my super and 357 Sig. It feeds well in my Sig 229 and I use it in 9MM also. For me it is an all around bullet. It's a gas check design. The Sig is a tack driver with it, the 9MM not so much, but I haven't played around with different load combo's.

I know the SWC work, and are quite popular for IPSC as they cut neat holes. I run 125 con rn from Magma in my .38 super guns (STI 2011) with great results. They are probably the most popular size/shape at my local club.
