Remington 760 cast

Remington 760 made in 1978, caliber 30-06. Range 103 yards. Last 30 rounds of the day, with 86 rounds fired previously. No leading. Load consisted of 10.2 grains of Trailboss from Lee dipper. R-P cases with CCI 200 primers. Bullet is Lasercast .310 diameter 165 FP plain base, NOE .308 expander button in Lee universal belling die. No idea about velocity, but they were pretty slow. First cast this rifle has ever fired. The last three, rounds right, high and low were fired offhand, with 27 in an OK group...I am more than happy with this. Rounds were fired as fast as I could rack the slide and put the crosshairs on the bullseye(red dot above) and squeeze the trigger. Load was about 1/2 inch high at 50 and about 4 inches low at 103 yards...

Brass has been fired 7-8 times and dates from 1987-88. Brass needs to be annealed as seating the bullets felt inconsistent. Lee dipper had a 0.1 variation in 10 charges tested. I feel if cases were annealed and I took greater care with the powder charges, and aiming, the group would be much tighter. Cases were not crimped and I didn't even remove the slight bell in the case mouth...

The annealing to make the case tension more consistent would probably help. I question whether a .1 grain inconsistency in a 30-06 case is going to make much difference given the use of Trailboss, but you never know until you test it.
I have one of those rifles and I love it.

Same range as before. 5 rounds fired in group. Not every group is this tight, but when I take my time they hover around this size. If I rush or am not consistent in holding the rifle, they open up another 3/4 to 1". Cases annealed. Same load as before with the exception of 11 grains of Trailboss weighed by RCBS electronic scale. Scope is an older Tasco 4X that I bought around 1990 or 1991 for $10. I think this is what is hurting accuracy, as the glass isn't the clearest and I am struggling with the sight picture. Gun seems to be more accurate with cast than jacketed ammo...

75 yard groups with same ammo as above...Adjusted scope up four clicks and fired groups at 103 yards and they landed in same spot...Needless to say these rounds fly like a brick and drop considerably...

The 760 is a great rifle and it looks like you have found your light load. Now on to the hunting load- the same bullet around 2000 fps would work I bet. Great shooting!

Not sure about that flyer...I think I might try this load again...Wished the bullets were sized to .310", but they were a gift from a friend. They do lead the bore a bit, I'm guessing to the higher velocity and being undersized...

Looks promising, those 760s will shoot! Easy to pull one, triggers aren't the best, try 3 more 5 shot groups with the red dot and 310 dia! I've a nice mauser that I think ill give that a try in, seems a familar load , 13 gr red dot,, yep.

I used to hunt with a fellow that had a 760 he bought new around 1975 and it was a carbine 30-06 that really hurt your ears when he would shoot. And he always used a 10 round magazine. Brings back alot of good memories and laughs!

I have a model 7600 that shoots pretty well. I installed a Timney trigger kit (from Brownells) and it helps a bunch as the stock trigger wasn't very good.

I too shoot several Model 760 rifles (in 5 calibers) from .244REM through (rebored by JES) 9.3x62mm Mauser, my "pickup rifle" is a .30-06 & my "small to medium game load" is a 170 grain PBCB at about 1400FPS to equal the old-school .32-40WCF load. = That load is quite accurate & takes our TX jackrabbits, bobcats, coyotes, "BBQ-size" feral hogs & WT deer very well.
(I also load a 180 grain GCCB load at about 2,000FPS for bigger game, which works well, too.)

My old 760 was first year of manufacture. 53? It's quite accurate with 311041 sized .309 and up to 20 gr of 2400. Right at 1800 fps. My alloy is soft, about bhn 10 and I have a small HP.

I believe we've killed 10 deer and a couple coyotes with this load and have seen no reason to change it.

Inasmuch as every rifle seems to be a law unto itself, whatever load that works in your rifle is the RIGHT LOAD.

My cousin's "pet load" that seems to do "acceptable hunting accuracy" in any number of .30-06 rifles is 30 grains of 3031 in front of a 180 grain GCCB for about 1800FPS & it's a quite adequate for WT & similar sized game.
(Generally the only "paper punching" that I do is "sighting in", so that hunting accuracy is FINE, given the short ranges "in the thick stuff" that we south TX folk usually hunt in.)

For example last Friday, a classmate from TMN took a nice Axis doe at 22 long steps.

1954. = My "pet" 760 in .300 Savage was made in July '54 & it appears to be factory drilled/tapped.

These sure are interesting rifles...My experience is when they like a load, they really like it and when they don't, rounds are all over the place...Very little middle ground...This rifle was my dad's and I would like for my sons to take their first deer with it...

The Remington 760 is a grand hunting rifle and the 30-06 is a grand clambering!

To the Op: I am very impressed with the overall performance with cast that your rifle is delivering. One usually does not get several different loads to perform in the same rifle. Good job!

Just a tip on getting the most of your load development:

I make my own targets using Microsoft Excel (the spreadsheet program). I liken my design to a “visual vice”. It takes the guess work out of aiming for me.

What my target consists of is four relatively equally sized solid black squares on a plain white paper. I work with the spread sheet program until I get my white space between the blackened squares to fit my cross hairs with a minimal amount of white around them. I also manipulate the black space to suit me as well. The black space is created with the cell fill option. If you are not comfortable with the program you can usually find someone who is handy with it as it is likely the premiere program of it’s ilk and many folks use it.

When you use these targets, you need to level them reasonably well. As I get a target just right I will type in an appropriate note and save the text in a lower corner of the work sheet.

If I want a different target I just create a new worksheet, copy the existing target closest to what I want to create to the new sheet and then start modifying, relabel it for easy identification and try it out.

If my rifle is zeroed a bit high say an inch or two high at 100 yds. this gives me four targets in one by merely rotating the backer 90 degrees after each group is fired.
