new bullet for 44-40

I want to try a heavier bullet in my M92. I now have the 427098 and the Lee 429-200 RF.

I want to try the Lee 240 RN. Before I buy the mold, I would like to find out if the 240 bullet increases the overall length, when seated to the crimp groove, to the extent where the cartridge will be too long to feed from the magazine.

Any info and help is appreciated.

I can not speak for the Mod 92 in a 44-40 but I can for the Mod 66 and 73, along with the Mod 92 in the 45 LC. You have to be careful not to exceed the OAL or they will not feed. There is no room for longer boolits. In my Mod 92 45 LC I started shooting the lee 452-228-1R, and had no problems because it had no crimp grove. I went to the Lee TL452-230-2R which does have a crimp grove and could not get them to feed because the OAL was 1/32 of an inch longer than what I had with the 452-228-IR.

Just by looking at the pics of the Lee boolit you are shooting now, which is what I shoot in my 44-40s, and the 240 gr RN, Knowing what I know about my Mod 92 45 LC I would say it probably will not work if you crimp it in the crimping grove. You may get away with seating it deeper in the case and using a taper crimp die on it if you can find one.

I would suggest you find someone here that uses The Lee 429-240-2R mould and see if they will send you a dozen boolits to try before you buy the mould, unless you have a 44 mag you can use them in.

I hope this helps you some in your decision making process, sorry I can't give you any better info that what I have. I am also interested in seeing what others have to say that esp those who have Mod 92s in 44-40.

Thanks for the info.

I seems a short nose and longer base would do the trick to keep OAL within specs.

I do have a 44-40 Lee factory crimp die.
