What causes this ring 30-06 brass?

I traded for a bunch of 30-06 cases from members here and several of them have this ring around the top of the neck.

What causes/caused this? (my guess is over crimping but that's just a guess)

Will it be a problem for loading and shooting? (should I toss them or save the cases to reform into?)

Military head stamp? I've seen it before, 90+% sure it was on military brass. Suspect it was to ensure no bullet creep. That said, I know I've load bunches and never had a problem.

Yep That's a factory crimp mark. Factories crimp are more of a stake than a end crimp.

Looks like factory Winchester crimps to me. Will gladly dispose of that junk for ya. My 700 has a strong preference for Winchester brass.

I have that ring on two dozen different calibers of brass. Many different manufacturers including both European and US brands. Probably more than 10000 once fired cases.
It is just the factory crimp.
My brass that was purchased as new virgin brass does not have that.

Crimp your cases with a Lee FCD and they will have the ring too.

Military head stamp?

The headstamp in on the other end, where the primer is.

The question was, is it military brass as opposed to commercial. Yes I know which end has the head stamp.

I think Hickory meant to say The headstamp in on the other end, where the primer is.

Apparently A) I am not familiar with the subtlety of the meaning of colors on this forum and B) I must be color blind because it appears black on my screen.[smilie=s:

Crimp. If you over crimp a bullet intentionally you can see a similar crimp after shooting it. I have done it on 45lc brass testing neck tension and crimp on velocity increases.

Thanks for all your answers. You confirmed what I kind of figured but wanted to be 100% sure

I get the same marks on 300 savage brass. I also use a Lee FCD. Anyone think this will affect the life of the brass.

It's always good to be sure!

It shouldn't affect the life of the brass. Depending on how much it stretches it will probably be removed the first time you trim it.

I concur that it is a factory crimp. I have also used the lee factory crimp dies and on those first attempts with them, I experienced several splits at the case mouth. These were apparently from over crimping on some of the longer cases. Other than that, the marks are harmless. Load 'em up! :)
