Dang now I have to decide between a 204 Ruger or 20 Nosler for a Coyote specific AR build.

20 Nosler – a New Cartridge that is Not Yet Announced?!

SAAMI has accepted cartridge and chamber drawings of a couple of new cartridges. Both are Nosler cartridges. One is the recently announced .22 Nosler, which we covered in a separate article. And the next one is a .20 Nosler, which is a cartridge not yet officially announced by Nosler as of today (06/16/2017).
If you remember, the .22 Nosler is a .224 caliber cartridge with a case body similar to that of 6.8 SPC but with a rebated rim of .378 diameter. The case thickness allows to fit the cartridge into 6.8 SPC magazines and the rebated rim makes it fit the standard AR-15 .223/5.56 bolt face. So to switch to this caliber all you need is a different barrel and 6.8 SPC magazines.

Judging by the drawings, the .20 Nosler is based on the same rebated rim case as the .22 Nosler. However, it is not quite a necked down .22 Nosler. If you look closely, you’ll see that it has slightly different shoulder and neck height. Obviously, both cartridges are aimed at the varmint hunting market. The .20 Nosler should be able to offer impressive ballistics for a cartridge fitting into the AR-15 platform. I assume it will be offered with some of the following .204 caliber Nosler bullets:

The most notable of current .20 caliber cartridges suitable for the AR-15 is perhaps the .204 Ruger. Probably, the .20 Nosler will offer a comparable percentage of muzzle velocity increase over the .204 Ruger as does the .22 Nosler over the .223 Remington.
Interestingly, Pacific Tool & Gauge already offers chamber reamers for the .20 Nosler as a new product in their catalog.

It appears someone at Nosler has a little talent.
But, may only be filling a nitch for people with money.

They are still trying to find the ultimate. A very, very old quest. Keep your brass catcher attached so you won't lose that brass. I think the .204 Ruger and .223 will be with us for a while yet.

If I was going to shoot a .20 in a brass flinger, it would be the 20 practical and I probably wouldn't worry about keeping up with brass in hunting situations.

Looks like nosler has covered all the caliber bases with the new Nosler line up 20, 22, 26, 28, 30, 33 Nosler. I don't recall there being a 38 (375 caliber) Nosler yet but I'm sure they're working on it.

It's internet speculation that the 22 Nosler is similar to the 6.8 Remington and some even say that is the parent case with some changes. Nosler has never indicated the 6.8 is the parent case. While the 6.8 SPC is similarly shaped, the .22 Nosler case is much closer in design to the .224 Winchester E5 experimental cartridge. Depending on sources, the E5 with it's rebated rim, is believe to be one of the many cartridges Winchester experimented with after the company submitted it's Winchester Light Military rifle and the .224 E1 and E42 cartridges to the U.S. Army for trials in the 1950's.

Correct, I own one. It is a unique case. As usual the internet is wrong.

I also own a 22 nosler and until recently owned a 6.8. The cases are similar but the 22 nosler has the rebated rim of the .223/5.56 family and the shoulder is farther forward than the 6.8. The diameter of the case body is the same and the 22 nosler does require the use of 6.8 magazines. The 22 nosler case is also longer preventing the use of the 6.8 case to make 22 nosler brass.

As someone who's owned a .204 Ruger, and would eventually like to get back into the 20 Caliber, the 20 Practical does indeed seem "practical". This is the one I'd be looking at.
