Wasn't there an incident during the Revolution or perhaps the French and Indian wars where one side used a sprig of pine to ID friendly troops? A lot of our troops in Colonial times "wore what you brung"!

I gather just from the weaponry in the photos that this is equipment for British troops and other commonwealth troops.Robert

Wish we had a Civil War example to compare to the modern kit. Somewhere in a book I have a quote from one of Stonewall Jackson's veterans who said "Old Jackson gave us a gum blanket (rubberized on one side), a musket and a hundred rounds. Then he drove us like hell."
