Have a Arisaka 7.7x58 that Bubba reamed the shoulder area of the chamber so now the shoulder is way far forward. My 7.7 dies move the shoulder back when I attempt to neck size the brass. Tried 7.52x54R die but same thing. How can I neck size my brass without touching my "custom" shoulder?
P.S. The rifle is not rechambered in another caliber(i.e. 30-06) as it will not chamber other calieb ammo. Only the shoulder area was reamed forward- a true Bubba job.

So you have a 7.7x58 Bubba Improved ?

Sort of like an Ackley Improved, but not as Improved......

Get another size die and cut about ¼" off of it.
If that's not enough, take off some more.

If you have fired cases from that rifle just back out the size die so it doesn't touch the shoulder .

Jack, when the die is backed off to not touch the shoulder the neck is not contacted either.
Jake, removing some of the die body would allow the brass to enter the die further-dont see how that helps.

Custom Lee collet neck sizer...

Get a .303 Brit Lee collet neck die to neck size, use washers between the die and holder so the die does not hit the shoulder. There are also ways of mixing, matching, and cutting the collet pieces so you don't need washers.

any 30 cal neck size die will do the job.
you just need to expand it back up afterwards.
an M-die should do that.

did they change the shoulder angle?
like they might have cut the barrel off and short chambered an 0-6, long chambered a 300 savage or...
I have a 31 cal 300 savage that was simply cut off re-threaded and the chamber was cleaned up on.

Neck size them with a .32 S&W/.32 H&R die after decapping with a Lee Loader decap rod &base.
If it is Ackley type you may have to use the pistol die for seating also. Some of you are laughing and some of you are shaking your head and some of you are wondering. I have done it. It works.
Best, Thomas.

We would love a pic of that creature next to a 7.7 and a 30-06.

I load my 358 win cases with a 38 special die set...
they are just holes in steel.

The idea of using a 32 S&W resizing die to work the neck is interesting. One concern is precisely stopping the brass at a point where it does not touch the shoulder area. Is there a way to limit my press handle/ram travel to stop insertion at a determined point?

You do that by adjusting how deep the die is screwed into the press. Ignore the instructions to screw it down to the shell holder, you have to find where the stop point is and lock your die down there.

4296; To stop ram travel at a predetermined spot, cut a length of tubing that fits around the shell holder and sits on top of the ram. This will take a little trial and error to accomplish but will give you the stop point you're looking for. I cut the tubing a few thousandths long and sneak up on the length using a disc sander. Gp

Note also that you do not have to size all of the neck. If you size as little as 1/16 inch of the neck, that is plenty to hold the bullet and provide sufficient tension for satisfactory ignition.

Look for a 300 win mag or other short 300 magnum sizer die and replace the expander ball with one from a 7.7 or 303 die. Your shoulder should not be touched.

I do what texassako does with washers and bushings and Lee Collet dies.

You are shooting this thing?????????????? Spring for a ream to .30-06 if that will clean up the chamber. If not, spring for a different gun.

I've used the pistol die method to load good ammo in 7.62x39, 7.62x54, and .35 Rem. Of course this is for one rifle; they may not fit another.

a 300 wsm die would do the job too.

you can just use your eyes to see when to stop pushing on the handle if you use a pistol die to neck size the cases.
unless your blind, which would explain the initial purchase.

I shot some good .303 British shells the other day that I loaded using 7.7 Japanese dies last year. Neck sized nicely and fit a Lithgow last year and a BSA this year. I wonder if I should even buy .303 dies?

:) Of course,a really simple method would be to smoke the cases and slowly move them into the die.
Good luck.have fun.Be safe.

Find a reamer and run it into the die until it fits the chamber.

Again, this neck sizer will do from 308 to 300 win mag, inside diameter is large enough that your "improved" 7.7 case will not be touched at the shoulder, size the neck only and expand with an M style die. It does come set up for .308 diameter bullets, inside sized and expanded diameter of .3055, you could change the expander button for a .303 Brit one if you wanted to. 28.00 and all your problems solved for bubba!:drinks: hopefully?
