Ideal 311466 and RCBS 30-150-SP

I've been working with these two molds a couple of weeks now. They are more or less the same bullet, the Ideal being the classic Loverin. The RCBS has been trouble as it had a couple of flaws when I got it. The sprue plate is warped to the point of being unusable despite my efforts to flatten it again. It caused fins on the base. I "borrowed" a sprue plate from one of my other RCBS molds. The alignment pin holes were buggered up and had to be smoothed in order to get the blocks to come together. So now it is casting well. I just have to get in contact with RCBS customer service to get a new sprue plate.

The Ideal 311466 casts effortlessly.

Here are the bullets:

This group is the RCBS bullet cast with the original sprue plate and then trimmed of all the flashing. The load is 12.0 grs. Unique and loaded to a coal of 2.535". I think this needs to be loaded out to 2.595", which is the length of the 311466 load.

Here is the 311466 loaded to 2.595" over 13.0 grs Red Dot. I tried this load at the shorter length also, with poor results.

two of my favorites.
I use the rcbs in the 0-6 with [surprise] 2400 to shoot ground squirrels.
yeah a little over kill but it sure is fun.
and in the model 94 for deer hunting.

the 466 goes in the savage 340-A and gets pushed to,,, well,, about top speed let's say.
it goes bunny hunting and is just shot at stuff that needs shot.
you know rocks, pumpkins, Shasta soda, apples,, stuff.

That's some nice shootin'! Did you chrono either of those loads?
According to my loading records, in the .308 Win Ruger 77, I once obtained a 1.3" 5 shot group at 100 yds with the RCBS 30-150, with 21.5g of 2400. The velocity was 2038fps with an SD of 27.

Thanks! No, my chronograph is non functional right now because a gascheck came off a bullet from my .338-06 and cut the cable. I got a new cable but it is still nf.

I called RCBS today to obtain a new sprue plate for the 30-150-SP mould. I tried every way I could to pay them. Their response is that they "have no way to collect money" from me. So, my new sprue plate is on it's way to me. I was asked to continue to buy RCBS products. I will certainly do that!

I have some of the 30-150-SP bullets cast with the "borrowed" sprue plate. No trimming was required of them and all of the previous batch that were not lubed and sized already went back in the pot. I'm somewhat amazed that those shot as well as they did. I'm hoping that the new batch shoots much better.

The ultimate home for these two and the Accurate 31-160G is a Krieger 1-17 twist barrel that is due in about Christmas. Knowing how fast my gunsmith works, I expect I will be shooting it about the end of March.

RCBS sent two sprue plates, both a large and a small. I installed the small and have been casting bullets with no problems.

The Krieger barrel was shipped yesterday. Could be shooting this by January!

Also, got my chrony repaired and got some actual data to post.

And...since NOE put 30 molds on sale I broke down and got a 4C 310-165-FN (XCB) to compare with the 31-160G.

These last two groups were cast, loaded, and shot consecutively so I am at a loss as to why they are different velocity wise.

they are 100 fps apart but show the same variance and such.

a little tip on that XCB bullet.
it needs a hard alloy, I have one of the three original molds from the test batch.
I use it in a 10 twist and just about match jacketed velocity with it, if I use near lino-type alloy.
the combination is too hard on my rifles throat so I don't do that too often.

I've been shooting these and the 31-160G cast of 93/3.5/3.5 air cooled. The 31-160G shoots into an inch at 100 at ~2400 fps from my 1-12 Krieger or Douglas barreled rifles. But that's a different thread.
