I went back to the shop my son made this score (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?339506-Ideal-358439-The-value-of-a-good-education!) on and made them an offer on the mother load!

I ended up with this and 14 other molds, all in excellent shape. However, the 358395 shows as a 3 lube groove, 148 gr boolit in my catalogues.
This one has two lube grooves and scales out just shy of 130. Did they make it in several variations?201144

The mold appears to be unaltered and is clearly marked "Ideal 358395".

If you have other Ideal molds you could measure the height of the mold blocks. It sounds like someone milled a little material off of the top. Difference in alloy should not have that much difference in weight in that size bullet.

It's the same height as the other molds I have and the crimp groove is still there, so I don't think it's been milled down.
It's the older style with the attached base pin.201151

That boolit seems to look more like the Lyman #358087 design but with a hollow base.
Lyman lists the weight in solid base as 125 grain or 140 grain. I wonder if it is the 140 grain version and with the hollow base drops at 130 grains ? Might be miss marked ? Special orders were common then.
Nice mould...good score !

The solid base insert that casts a solid base with a bumped nose came with it.
I haven't cast with it yet, but I'll bet it will be close to 148 grs.201156

Special order?

That doesn't look like the pin in ANY Lyman/Ideal mould I have ever seen. I have seen it on older moulds that were altered aftermarket. Several people do it. hollowpointmold.com is one I use. What is now the nose used to be the base on the original mold.

Found an article by beagle here (http://www.castpics.net/subsite2/HowTo/Casting%20Hollow%20Point%20and%20Hollow%20Base%20B ullets.pdf) wherein he states that the early ideal molds were built with this type of attached pin. I agree with him - it's a fast way to cast hollow base boolits!

I had a 358395 with that pin and the nose was completely different. I believe it might be cherry number mis-identification.
