Depending on how a deal works out, I might have a new gun project to play around with. I'm thinking of having the 30-06 barrel rebored to something in 35 cal. The easy option is the 35 Whelen, but I'm open to other suggestions. My question is, what is THE BEST mold for that caliber? Something that is deadly accurate, great for hunting, and just plain fun to shoot.

This is a great design for a 35 Whelen.

Tom at accurate made this one up for me a few years ago. I drill a HP for hunting. AA2230 powder and BAC Lube. Shoots well in my VZ-24 35 Whelen

My favorite for all around shooting in the 35 Whelen and 358 Winchester is the RCBS 35-200-FP.

I'm looking into them. :)

How do you guys feel about the NOE 360-310-RF Thumper or the 360-230-RF?

Thanks! :)

Good evening, or I guess morning!
I shoot a Sako re-barreled in 35 Whelen. Works like a charm with either the RCBS 200gr or the Lee 6 cavity 200gr. The Lee is a close copy. I got tired of making 2 at a time and had a $$card from a LGS that made the Lee mold almost free. I then made it into a Plain base boolit by getting the Gas check removed. I now make piles of 200gr+ boolits for easy shooting reduced recoil loads. The coyote and several gophers didn't seem to notice they were reduced loads.....I haven't shot any deer with the plain based boolit yet, but the RCBS with a GC worked really well a couple of years ago. (YIKES....I last hunted with it 8 years ago!) I have shot a lot of targets and steel plates. A 200gr boolit traveling at 1400fps plus still gives a fair whump and makes for fun shooting in a heavy rifle.

Have an awesome weekend:drinks:

Both of those shoot best in my 1 in 12 twist 35 Whelen.

My favorite for all around shooting in the 35 Whelen and 358 Winchester is the RCBS 35-200-FP.

Mine also. Take care, Tom

The RCBS 35-200 is a great bullet NOE makes a wonderful 4 cav copy with pins for hp and cup points.
That one mold allows many many options

This topic comes up all the time. The search either begins, and promptly ends, or eventually ends up at the RCBS 35-200-FN. I have the clone from NOE. Accurate and MP make one as well. I think I own the MP version as well. Unless I want a heavier bullet I see no need to try anything else.

The 200 FN won't feed in all guns not in my VZ-24 anyway. I also like shooting full power 35 whelen loads if I like with the 275 gr Boolits.

Welp, I guess if I only get 1 mold, it has to be an RCBS 35-200-FN or a clone. :D

I'd like a heavy boolit to play around with as well. From what I've seen of the NOE 360-310-RF might be just what I'm wanting.

Don't order it in 1-16 twist if you want to shoot that 310 grainer or anything like it. My 16 is only happy with up to 250s, but the 14 happily eats whatever she's fed. A 12 might be even better for 300+.

I stick to heavy bullets in the .35. Where I live, I'm around #5 on the food chain. I like a little extra weight.

The question is more than a bit like "What is THE BEST suit to wear to church" and will get the same sort of range of answers.

I'm with Waksupi on this one, I like a little heavy when I point it at critters,,,,,

RCBS, sure, but the Lyman 358315 is about the same weight, and RN. I have both, and they are deadly accurate. See picture of 25-yd 5-shot group...

I'm gonna answer, then I'm gonna hide under the table.

I shoot cast in it 158s (commercial) for grouse, snowshoes, and plinking and have started using Lee 200s (mine), but what it loves better than anything else is 225 Partitions.

Like most 35cal. shooter I like the 200RF I own the Noe 360-200 witk the pins for hollow point, cup point and flat point. I load these in all my 35cals. right down to 38spl. Another mould worth mentioning and one that works well for me is the Saeco #352 2AB this is a FP that drops a bullet at 240gr. My two favorite 35cal moulds Gp

I have a 220 grain MP hollow point for deer, but as a general rule you won't find a better 35 caliber bullet than the RCBS 200.

I have the RCBS 35-200 and the NOE 35-230wfn for my 358 Win. Tom at Accurate can put multiple designs in the same mold. I did that for my 8x57, 2 gc hunting bore riders and a pb design for reduced plinkers. hc18flyer

Based on what I've learned here I traded for a RCBS 200 gr FN mould. My .358 loves it therefore so do I. Mine finish up at 217 grs and I can't see needing anything else for hunting Texas. I play with .357" 150SWC Lees for plinking with light charges of Bullseye or Red Dot and they are a hoot.
Best, Thomas.

Welp, the deal fell through on the sporterized Springfield, so now I need to find a new gun to work with. I'm thinking a Mauser. There's plenty barreled actions floating around. How hard would it be to convert one from 8mm to 358 Winchester? Is it as simple as having the barrel rebored, or would I have to mess with the magazine?

I can't help on the alchemy of Mauser feeding, but some great .35x57mms are the no muss and no fuss Mauser options: 9x57 Mauser, 9x57 Mauser American, 35XCB(CBs own), and the fun named 357 Mauser Wallop (AIed to approximate Whelen capacity).

There are no flies on the Saeco 352 @ 245 gr.

I love the RCBS in 200 and 250 grn molds but I also have an accurate mold model 235L that I really like. If you go the 358 win route, you will not regret it.

You know of course, that the 8x57 case is longer than the 358 so the barrel gets cut, threaded and rechambered. It is probably easier to rebarrel at that point.

Yep, I though about that. I was going to send a barreled receiver to Jes for a rebore, but if I go with 358 Win, I'll probably just try to find a complete receiver and bolt and buy a new barrel for it.

this is one of the best and it doesn't cost an arm and leg. Ive killed deer and pigs with it in the 35 rem and 356 and it gets the job done and is a very accurate bullet.
My favorite for all around shooting in the 35 Whelen and 358 Winchester is the RCBS 35-200-FP.
