Can anyone suggest a light load (about 1050 to 1200 fps with a 7.5" barrel) using unique or 5744 with a lee 300 gas check boolit. Also any suggestions on whether I should use the small rifle or swith to a small pistol primer for these loads.
Thanks

I think they need a small rifle primer but it's been a while since I loaded for mine. Matter of fact, changing over the primer tube is one reason I gave it up.

targetshootr: Get a Lee Classic Cast turret press with the Safety Prime and changing calibers and primer size is literally a matter of seconds. I can load 100 primers in the primer feed in 30 seconds. Doesn't cost much more than a box of 454..DALE

Accurate gives 19 grains of #9 for 1300 fps, and only 19000 psi. I use this with a 300 grain RCBS SWC or RFP in my ragging bool. With my eyes about 2" at 25 yds (I'm still working on it).

My powder of choice for light loads is Bluedot. I use nothing but CCI 400 primers, small pistol primers have thinner cups and seat too deeply. I've had some adventures with light loadings of both AAC#9 and WC820 in .454, so I avoid them just as I avoid light charges of H-110 or WW296. Slow burning ball powders cause erratic ignition in the magnum cases, especially with lighter boolits.

Sounds like I'd better stick with the small rifle. I was wondering if anyone had used pistol. I know they're not as deep. I had been using wsr's with 296. I'm just sick of the heavy loads. I'm convinced I can kill whitetail just effectively with lighter loads and really don't want to shoot the shorter 45 lc. I like the gun, and have a good trigger on it, just want to tone it down a bit. I figure with a light load that starline brass will last a looooooong time.

i gave up trying to make light loads for my R.B.
now i either load regular .454 or full house .45colt. (which is still PLENTY STOUT!)
P.S.
YOU MUST USE SMALL RIFLE PRIMERS WITH THE .454

I load 10 gr of Herco for around 1100 fps in my SRH behind a 250 gr FNL accurate to about 80 yards (can keep all in a 8 in plate) for deer. Killed a lot of deer with this load, (maybe not a lot but quite a few). Dropped most in their tracks, one went 20 yards.

Sounds exactly what I'm looking for.
Thanks

I have "recently" come into possession of two, not one but TWO Raging Bulls. One is an 8" barrel and one is 5" should make a nice "carry" gun. They will both be fitted with Red Dots.

I have full intentions of working up a ".454 Full Load" with the Lee 300 gr RF GC bullet (this will be a harder bullet than I normally use - will use WW/Lino 5/1 with Hornady gas checks. This will use WC 820 and will be loaded to 1600 fps.

I will also have a "moderate" load - a Lyman 452664 bullet of WW+2% tin and loaded ahead of Hodgdon's Titegroup to give about 1200 fps.

All loads will use Starline .454 Brass.

That should handle all that I will need with a .454 Casull. Any other chores for .45's will be handled with my .625's.

You know, a feller COULD get hooked on these .45 Caliber revolvers:mrgreen:.

Dillon must be different. I have to change the primer tube and the primer plate thingy and for all my trouble I end up with a big revolver bouncing off my head. I'm sticking with the extry 45 colt cylinder.

Have you cast any of that Lee boolit yet? I use the same mould, and mine weigh 320 gr. ready to load. I'll be interested to know if you can actually get 1600 fps. safely out of either of the RB's using WC 820......I haven't.
