Some hollow point Lyman/Ideal molds...

First up, for the .38/40 Winchester, Douglas Sorenson's No.40388...
199375

Next, for the .44 Remington Magnum, Ray Thompson's No.429244...
199374

And last, but certainly not least, Elmer Keith's No.429421...
199373

THAT KEITH MOLD IS A TREASURE. Cast it soft and it will open up to almost a full inch.

I can take only minor credit for the condition of the molds. They belonged to my Dad's uncle from the time they were new until his death in 1963. My Dad got them when his uncle's estate was settled, and kept them until 2001 or 2002, when he passed them on to me. I have much newer double-cavity versions of the 429421 and 429244 (bought in the mid/late-1980s... and I was terribly disappointed when I saw the rounded lube grooves in the new incarnations), and don't take the old single-cavity models out much these days. Once in a while, though, I get hankering for some hollow-points in the .44. The DCs are faster, but there's something kinda pleasing about taking the time to produce a small hoard of the old HPs now and then. Carries me back to many, many hours spent with my Dad melting down ingots and casting with the old Ideals into the late hours of the night.

Those old molds like that are pretty cool. I have 2 of the 3 you list. There are better molds for pure volume but i will never sell my old school single cavity HP (and HB) molds.

The 429244 HP cast from my first bullet mold ever (single cavity) are still my .44 special/magnum hunting bullets.

I have the Keith in .38/.357, dual pin and the .45 also, both single cavity's. They are a real kick in the pants to learn to blend your Pb recipe for and try to get maximum expansion without fragmentation...

This is my newest MP mould, here I had to learn to cast with brass...not too bad of a learning curve if you actually watch the temps. with a thermometer and one of those electric gizmos that you point and aim at the item you want to measure.

TCFAN...that's an impressive lineup of HP's...I'm envious!

What alloy is best for hollow point expansion? Pistol and/or rifle.

In pistols I've found that it's about 1 ~ 1.25 BHN / 100 FPS.
Alloy...low pressure...pure Pb with 1 ~ 2% Sn. it's soft/malleable doesn't frag easily, retains it's weight.

This site is a real treat for casters of the HP . . . https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-MIt11Lihm02hMxIIY-b0w/videos
