Question for the Gun Nuts?
I found a Ruger SP 101 today at local Gun Shop. Caliber .32 H&R Mag. Looks new, in fact, I thought it was until I looked closely, no powder burns on cylinder, no signs of use , except powder burns on barrel , cylinder end, very light. Everything looks goodto me. Asking price $400 out the door. Is this a fair price or too high?
Thanks in advance for your comments and or advice.

If you buy it I've got about four boxes of Hornady xtp's and a couple hundred store bought swc cast. If you'd be interested. Oh and a set of Lee dies.

My ex had one of those SP-101's. Neet revlover but the DA triger pull is heavy.

I never worked on one of these, but back before my hands got so bad, I worked on a few Security Sixes. I found them to be the easiest revolver to get a light, usable DA pull. My ex's stainless went 7# DA, and would reliably bust Rem 7 1/2's. So, if the SP's lockwork is similar, it could be made into a dandy little carry piece. Personally, I have no idea what the caliber is good for. Since we all handload, anyway, the .357 makes the most sense to me.

I'd call it the upper side of the normal price range, but, if you've put your hands on it and pronounced it good, the price difference fades to zilch.

I have two of 'em and also call 'em good.

I bought an SP101, 3-1/16 barrel, .357 used at a local shop 4 or5 years ago in the mid $300 range. The dealer claimed it had been purchased by a woman in the midst of a messy divorce and had never been put to use.

I agree with Nueces. If you really want it, pay the freight and it's yours. If the possibility of it going home with someone else doesn't bother you, throw a lowball number out and do some horse trading.

since it is a used gun....there is no MSRP(manufactures SUGGESTED retail price).
since you like it and the price is close...or you would have it already...go make an offer...cash in hand......most used guns have some wiggle room in the price.

Thats a little on the high side but maybe OTD. FWIW I just priced a SP 101 snub in .357 with custom finger grove wood grips and bobbed hammer for 350. I'll probably go get it the first of next week if its still there. 'Dem short bbls' got a hold on me but so does all tha others.

Thing is, if you want it, you better get it before it walks. Give a look over at gunbroker if thats any consolation.

........ummm WAIT ! The little guy on my shoulder says "git it". You have to remember whom you're confiding in here at the forum(s). We all have that, bug, thingy.........

They seem to be a sawed after gun the sp101. I've seen them around and wanted one but it never seemed to work out. They always seem to be $400 and up (around here anyway) and I finally seen one in the mid $300 range but it was buy that or another gun I was already intending to buy. I got the other gun and went back the next week and as you have already assumed, it was gone.
I'd say $400 is not a bad out the door price. Not great but you probubly won't do much better than that.

ive got one and i love it.
i have a wolff spring kit for it if you want.
the factory trigger pull is about 14 lbs.!
i got mine down to a sane and safe 8lbs.
many folks get light hammer strikes below 10 lbs. but i didnt.
you can have the kit for free i am not trying to sell it to you!.

i have a crimson trace grip on mine.

Thanks To All that replied! That .32 Mag SP 101 is the first one I have seen in searching for about four years. I thought that was about the going price, but it doesn't cost to check with other people, different locales. Usually this dealer, basically a pretty good fellow, {have dealt with him for about 30 years,} will throw in a box of ammo with the purchase, and that will cut the cost some, and have extra brass to reload. Probally will go back on Monday and bring that little bad boy home with me.

billhedges: It looks like the one you have pictured, box, papers all. If I get it, I will get back to you about the spring kit. Thanks

If you've been waiting four years, I'd show up as he's unlocking the door with coffee and doughnuts in hand to keep him occupied while you're doing the paperwork.

I have one of these (4" barrel in .32 H&R Mag). A spring kit and a bit of polishing and I have a smooth accurate piece in one of my favorite calibers.

It makes a dandy trail gun (I often shoot it with .32 S&W Long cases with mild loads -100 gr swc ahead of an appropriate charge of win 231 (2.8 grs) for a very nice, accurate, mild load for target or edible small game use.

I recently ran onto a deal for Hornady 90 gr SWC (4500 of them) and will be shooting them in all of my .32's for practice. At the price I got them, I can't "afford" to cast them.

Dale,
I understand about the Hornady 90 gr. swc. I also got a box, 500 for a ridiculous price and have been shooting them in the Single Six. I gave $5.00 for the box of 500, unopened. Like you, I can not cast them at that price. But, when I run out, I will have to dip into my stock of Lee boolits, and also start casting again for the .32 H & R Mag.
I have that problem with memory, (CSR, don't you know:confused:), and cannot remember the barrel length on that SP101 I mentioned earlier. I am returning to the pistol and pawn shop this morning to check on it. There are a couple of S&W .38's I want to check out also. Wish me luck, fellows.

Joe;
I hear your lament! That's happened to most of us a time or two, I would bet.

Well, there's always "next time"...

Ask your dealer what the price would be if he ordered one for you. I got a new 3" 32 H&R SP101 thru my dealer last year for $428.00 OTD. I had it within one week of asking him to order it.

You might check with your dealer for the new SP101 in 327 Fed. I think you can still shoot the 32 H&R, 32 long, 32 short.

I just purchased a 4" bbl SP101 in .32 magnum for my youngest daughter. Maybe for me if she doesn't care for the way it handles. I must have stolen mine as I only gave $350.00 out the door.

Gabby I sent you a PM regarding the ammo and dies.
