Anybody ever had cast bullets break? When I got done casting and was sorting out any rejects, I found a few bullets that had broken. All the breaks are in the hollow point area. I took a bullet and it smashed with a hammer and didn't break. Running 96.5 lead, 2.5 antimony, 1 tin. Is this just from getting in a hurry and dropping them too soon or a weak point from the hollow points?

haha, I saw your post on the 'book. You've already solved this issue! Just let them cool a tad more before dumping out, they'll break when still hot.

+1. Dropped a bit too hot.

Look at it this way - if you get the technique down on how to repeat it with every drop, it'll save you from buying a mold for a really big flat nose . . . . .

Looks like my ignots that I dropped while too hot into water.

Both dropping to hot and with more antimony than tin. That causes some brittleness.

Try dropping them in a bucket of water.

I drop mine into about 2 inches of pine shavings/sawdust, works like a charm and I have my flux right there too!

From my experience, reverse the antimony and tin percentages, drop them too soon in wiater, and you get bananna shaped boolits!

Ha. I've experience the banana bullets. Unfortunately the lead I'm getting is 2.5% antimony. I'd rather not cut it down. Guess I'll have to add more tin and let it cool longer.

If you only had a few of them, you've done great! It's a juggling act to keep the HP pins hot enough to release easily and also waiting long enough for the alloy to "set" in the mold.

Beat me to it.
