Whats DNS?

There was a mesage at the rally point to download something but I didn't make any sense to me, seemed all 'puter speak when I got to the download site.

See Cast Pics isn't loading now. :(

DNS is the way the internet uses numbers as a address to a particuler web site. and some thing went (now this is a tecknical term) SCREWY with the DNS for cast boolits.

Now "SCREWY" I understand. :-D

So I don't need to download anything then?

fishhawk

nope don't need to do any thing. wiljen had put a link onto the castpics site last night to a quick chat room so we could try and get things worked out. and for any one else 45nut never did get into the castboolits chat last night unless it was after i left.

Since this site costs its members so much money we expect, no, we demand, 100% reliability. [smilie=1:

to say that 45nut is unhappy would be a understatment...more like irate would be inline

I wonder if any of this "stuff" is related to the so-called DNS flaw that criminals are starting to exploit?:Fire::twisted:

Hell Ken,
That looks like me trying to check my email...My hats off to anyone who knows more about a 'puter than it has to be plugged in.

We should be fully up and running now everyone. Here's the low-down.
Our server that holds all the information is and was always running perfect. But there's another server that actually holds our name (gunloads.com) This is basically the DNS (Domain Name Server). That server holds the name and helps populate the name around the World Wide Web. The DNS server makes it so when you type in gunloads.com it points it to the server that is hosting the site.

Anywho, the DNS server crapped out and reverted everything back to default. So I had to go in and change the settings back to where they should have been, but even after that happens it takes time to populate the name around the web so everyone can access it. That's why some people could access it and some could not. All that can be done is to cuss out the DNS server operators and go about it as normal. Sorry for the downtime everyone.. It sure wasnt just Ken who had the headache the past few days.....

Well, thanks to all of you who had to jump into the breech on this one (and every other time, too). There have been problems all over the web, with DNS operators scrambling to patch against this latest vulnerability.

Or, you guys could just be muckin' with us so we don't take you for granted. I could go either way.

Glad its up and running good again.

Our MAH board went tits up real bad with the EZ board "hack" so I'm always nervous in situations like this.

I know this isn't that ezboard s***e or puku or whatever that crap is called now, but down time still makes me nervy.

However wonderful computers are I still think its a fundamentally fragile and flawed way of working, if something needs more than two people to understand it its not good.

Also if it keeps needing fixes then it seems broke to me.

Anyone ever read Dava Sobels book Longitude?

I got so sick of the re-directs I shut off the computer. if I ever see powweb again it will certainly be too soon.

Murphy

Ken,

It's great to see you back. And yes...if I NEVER see POWWEB again...it'll be too damn soon. I even took the desperation route and changed my DNS settings to access the site. A rather bold move as I'm not that literate with computer settings.

Catch ya' in chat soon!

It was just what the doctor ordered, I visit a few other sites but the people here truly seem like friends even though I've never met one of you in person.
