First time loading this boolit in .357 magnum. I seated it to the crimp groove and checked OAL. It came to 1.635...Lyman manual shows that it should be 1.553 with 1.590 being max OAL for .357 mag. What gives? They chamber fine and don't go past the cylinder face in both my Ruger Blackhawk and S&W 681.

In your situation, don't sweat it. Lyman originally recommended crimping over the front band so it would fit in shorter cylinders.

Ditto, but don't try it in your Marlin 1894.😕

Thanks gentlemen. I didn't figure it would be a serious issue since they seemed to fit in the cylinders ok, but thought it odd that the OAL was so far off. I sold my Rossi 92, so the two revolvers I mentioned are the only two .357s I have at the moment.

You are probably on the bottom of the crimp groove? I assume you're using this in a Ruger not a S&W?

Good thing you sold your Rossi 92 'cause they sure won't work in my 92.

Actually I was crimping towards the top of the groove. They fit in both my Ruger BH and S&W 681. I loaded and shot 20 rounds through the Ruger and they look very promising.

You know they say this is also an excellent .38 special bullet too.

That's strange I don't think I can't remember ever seeing a S&W that these bullets(173 SWC) could be loaded in the crimp groove that would fit in them? I've always loaded them in .38 Special cases(just for this reason).

As was stated before you do not have the shorter cylinders that necessitated the shorter overall length spec. If you are good, you are good.

Maybe since it's an L frame and the chambers aren't recessed?

[QUOTE=wbrco;4070334]You know they say this is also an excellent .38 special bullet too.

Wasn't Ideal/Lyman #358429 designed for the .38Spl. cartridge? I.e., you use the 1st crimp groove for the .38Spl. and may* have to seat -429 more deeply so as to crimp over the driving band (behind the bullet's nose) for the .357Mag.

*Some .357mag. cylinders are long enough to accommodate -429 crimped "normally."

I believe you're thinking of the 358156, which is also an excellent bullet. Was my first mold.

Mine are all N frames, 27s and 28. Most counter bored but, one not.

My understanding was the 358429 was designed for the .38 and that the 358477 was designed so you could use the crimp groove.
